Atrocious and Illogical!
Jyothi Venkatesh
After Dhamaal and Double Dhamaal, Total Dhamaal is the third installment in the crazy mad-cap Dhamaal franchise. It has an oft repeated illogical tale of a bunch of greedy and eccentric characters. running behind a hidden booty of 50 crores leading to a mad chase amongst them, including a middle aged bickering couple on the verge of a divorce, greedy siblings, local goons, a corrupt police commissioner and the mastermind of the loot. How they finally discover the hidden treasure forms the crux of the story.
Three cheers to the chemistry between Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit. Anil is hilarious as the husband with his amusing Gujarati accent and Madhuri uses her natural flair for Marathi to hit all the right comic notes. It is pathetic to see such talented actors torturing themselves on films like this which do not boast of even a proper story. Javed Jaffery and Riteish Deshmukh pack in the punch in an otherwise boring film which tests your patience as it progresses with wit that does not make you laugh While Ajay Devgn who also doubles up as the producer of the atrocious film merely sleep walks through his role while talented actors like Boman Irani, Mahesh Manjrekar and Esha Gupta have been grossly wasted in halfheartedly written characters. Niharica Raizada has been wasted as a hot girl in Arshad Wafrsi’s imagination which runs riot in just one scene
With poor writing, the film which could have otherwise turned out to be roller coaster ride has been reduced to be just slapstick and thanks to shoddy computer graphics. The film is just a random medley of inane sequences which laboriously try to make you giggle half heartedly.
Instead of setting out to watch Total Dhamaal which is nothing but an unabashed atrocious and illogical Inder Kumar cover version of Stanley Kramer’s rollicking It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, starring Sid Caesar, Mickey Rooney, Spencer Tracy , Ethel Merman, Jerry Lewis, Peter Falk etc, sit with the DVD of the original film released way back in 1963.
