Let me warn you that it is not for the weak hearted and is a psychological horror film with strong visuals and metaphors. The film is set during the latter part of the British Raj and the period setting adds some air of authenticity to the story.  It has a long, laborious and complicated story. A long time ago, the mother goddess had a greedy baby called Hastar. On account of his misappropriation of gold, the gods curse him never to be worshipped. But the Rao family ignored this edict and had built a shrine to Hastar and his mother. Although the baby is a real demon, generations after generation people have risked their lives to steal gold from his divine diapers.

Little Vinayak (Dhundiraj Prabhakar Jogalekar)  finds himself alone in the hut one night and dares to unchain the witchy monster in a scene fraught with terror. He is almost eaten but learns the secret of Hastar’s treasure and vows to return for it. There is Vinayak a bright-eyed, strong man with a queer moustache (Sohum Shah) eagerly making his way alone back to the family estate. The hut is a mass of cobwebs and he finds great-granny reduced to a skeleton. A tree has grown out of her empty stomach, but she is still alive.

To sum up, Tumbbad which is also being released in Tamil and Telugu, besides Marathi and Hindi is a moody and atmospheric film. It can be termed as a eerie and scary film. Some viewers may find the film a little too deep and disturbing, but fans of Hollywood horror films will be reminded of memorable movies in the genre like Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) and Eraserhead (1977) and A Nightmare on Elm Street.
