To put it in a nut shell, the film is about how a watch shop owner and comic book writer Vicky Velingkar (Sonalee Kulkarni) must be extra alert and go ahead by at least two steps ahead of her opponent to save herself and an important discovery from falling in the wrong hands. In what is reminiscent of Christopher Landon’s the brilliant Hollywood film Happy Death Day (2017), this Marathi film not only reminds you of Happy Death Day but also bears an uncanny resemblance to the Tapsee starrer Game Over especially in the first 20 minutes of the film

Vicky Velingkar is called to a crime scene by Inspector Salunkhe (Ketan Singh). After learning of her friend Srushti’s (Jui Pawar) death there, she leaves the place and goes to meet her hacker friend Lucky (Sangram Samel). Vicky is unable to believe that Shrushti had ended her life and is sure she was killed by someone. Lucky tells her that Srushti had sent him an encrypted mail that speaks of the location of some device that she, a scientist, had developed. However, a masked man enters the scene just then and kills both Vicky and Lucky. In seconds, Vicky wakes up from what was seemingly a dream, only to live through the same set of events over and over again. Before you end up in a shock and stupor, and start wondering why you are getting confused and confounded, you are startled to know that the killing is not real but something which is a premonition n Vicky’s mind

Happy Death Day pays tribute to Harold Ramis’s Groundhog Day (1993) through a mention since that film is considered the first to explore a recurring day theme, like this one. I do not want to be a spoil sport and let out the climax of the film but suffice to say that in this convoluted and complex film, Sonalee Kulkarni has given her 100 per cent concentration and steals the show whereas Spruha and Ketan Singh in roles which are dynamically different from what they seem to be in the film are good.

Though Saurabh Varma’s direction is quite deft, the proceedings of the film  and the way it meanders and at times keeps repeating itself, makes you wonder whether Saurabh has not stretched a 30 minute footage to a 2 hour plus. The film may not appeal to the masses as it has a screenplay which does not whet your appetite and what’s more is confusing and convoluted to the core though as far as technical aspects are concerned like sound design and camera work it scores. This film is only for classes and not for the masses!
