From the beginning of the 80s to the late 90s , there was one name that swept across the south, it was the name of Silk Smitha - Ali Peter John

She was born in a village in Andhra to poor parents who thought she was a burden as a girl and got her married at the age of 16 .

She was treated very badly by her husband and her in-laws and she ran away from home and sought shelter and hope in Chennai .

It was in Chennai that she found work as a touch up artist and from there she found roles played by junior artists and danced as a group dancer in films made in Tamil , Malayalam and Kannada .

She then turned a model and finally ended up up as a cabaret dancer and from a cabaret dancer she rose to be a vamp who played major roles and worked with all the leading heroes of all the languages in South .

And a time came when no big film could be made without her name in the cast . She was not a good or great actress , but she knew how to use her body to attract the audience to theatres .

Her name was not Silk Smitha , it was a name given to her by a director in whose film she played a character called Silk.

In about 17 years , Silk Smitha was seen in more than 450 films and it was her body beautiful and her expressive eyes and movements of her body that did the magic for her.

She was an expert in revealing her body according to the needs of the directors and she had to face the problem of being typed in every film she did .

In the early 90s , she was as good as any of the big stars. Her name could save films and the careers of directors and actors .

She was a sure sign of success whether it was a small or big film . She found her chance to act in Balu Mahendra's "Moondrun Pirai " starring Kamal Hassan and Sridevi .

The film was remade in hindi as "Sadma" and she was repeated in the film with Kamal and Sridevi.

That was perhaps the last film in which she could make a deadly impact with her eyes and her body movements .

She was known as " the sex goddess " long before Rekha or any other actress could be given that tag.

She was at the very top in 1995 and it seemed like she was facing some mental problem which affected her work .

She called her only good friend Anuradha to discuss her problem with her . But when Anuradha reached her house , the sex goddess had already hung herself from her fan in her room and was declared dead by the police and the post mortem confirmed it and the reason why she committed suicide is still not know even after 25 years .

She was only 35 when she died and what a life she had lived in those 35 years .

Her life was made into a film called "Dirty Pictures" with Vidya Balan playing her role and winning several major awards for her performance as the screen version of the life of the successful actress with a mysterious life .
