Excerpts

Did you take advice from your father before signing Bad Boy, your debut film?

My father was oblivious when I signed this film with Santoshi Saab .After signing the film when I informed him they were like surprised. My father just asked, “You didn’t tell me and Pinky I just jumped into . They were surprised when I shared this news with them.

How do you look at your journey?

As an actor my journey started 20 years from now. As a hero this is my debut film. I faced the camera when I was9 years old. MY father gave me a handicam and told me to do whatever I wish to do with the camera. As an actor I became an independent actor in 2016 in Mumbai. I did comedy impromptu on stage for almost 2 years, I did plenty of workshops and short films.2019 mid I got Bad Boy.

You don’t represent the word nepotism at all. What would you like to say about this discussion?

We are four siblings. None of my siblings had to struggle in Mumbai . I chose that path in 2016. I was with someone and she told me,” Tum mera haath toh mang sakta hai “she asked me, "What are you besides being a rich man’s son?" This hit me hard on my nerves. I decided the very next day. I have to get work on my own dum. It’s from that point of time I started my own journey. I have been to 60 auditions without informing them about it. I have stood in line and been rejected, insulted and asked to leave their office. People have called me unfit. I have experienced every insult. It was a choice. My father told me why I am doing all this. I told him I want to be someone on my own. I did get a few offers but that did not take off. Despite that I continued.

Being a privileged star kid earned and learned from you. How much was your first pocket money? What did you do with it?

I earned 5000 rupees. I used to do reviews of films and discussions on films. I was not too harsh as I know the struggle of the people from the film industry. The first film I reviewed was in 2009. It was my father’s film,” Chandini Chowk” . It wasn't a very good film. I was just 17.I am a die-hard fan of my father. He is one actor whose potential has been untapped . He is a chameleon who surprises us with every performance of his. He is just par excellence.

Is Mithun your inspiration?

My father is not as inspiring to me as my brother. My father came from nowhere and got the privilege of being the super star. My brother being the son of a super star launched in a big way unfortunately couldn’t break it. I generally believe when you are bogged down by life you have no other option but fight? If my brother can fight despite facing failures even I can.He has been my driving force. He is a very strong guy. His strength has been an inspiration throughout my struggle. Even that girl I was in a relationship with, taught me that. It was an inspiring puppy love.

So what is this,” Bad Boy” doing on reel?

I like to believe I am a good boy in real life. But on reel as the Bad Boy actually it is a title. The story of the film is such that this girl played by Amrin ,she falls for a tapoori and her father feels I am the most useless guy. He hails from high standard and I am just the opposite he gives me the title ,”Bad Boy.In the film my name is Raghu.

Bod Boy

Your father is the recipient of 3 National awards. Which of his films would you like to see as a remake?

Definitely wouldn’t like to see remakes of his National awarded iconic films. I would like to see his underrated films to be remade- Parmatma, Pyaar Huva chori chori , those were the gems of films from his career.

What is your learning from your struggle?

When I went through when you work hard you know the value. My expenditure is only films. I am not spend thrift.

Bad Boy has been bankrolled by Anjum Quereshi under the banner –Inbox Pictures. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi also stars Rajpal Yadav, Jonny Lever and others. The film is scheduled to release this Friday 28, 2023.
