Both his admirers and his rivals and also his critics will be surprised to see the life Nana Patekar is living these days. He has not come to Bombay for the last two years and has been living on his farm several kilometers away from Pune where he lives in a hut- like house where there is no electricity or water - ALI PETER JOHN

He fills water from a well in his little house and uses candles or lamps lit with kerosene to bring light into his house. He wears a loin cloth around his waist and ploughs his fields himself.

However, he continues to work for the welfare of the farmers all around Maharashtra . It is his only passion now. He has lost complete touch with the world of films and is very active at 70 plus....

I had the opportunity of talking to him for a few minutes and I was grateful that he recognized my voice even though we had not met for seven years....

I knew Nana didn't like to waste time for his words so I asked him why he was not making a comeback in hindi films.

He said the first reason was the spread of covid and the other reason was that he was not satisfied with the kind of scripts that were being offered to him. He said," Yeh nalayak log abhi bhi mujhe voh hi role karvaana chaahte hain.

Kab tak cheekhoonga aur chillaoonga main. Abhi mujhe kuch bahut hi ache role karne hain, nahin toh kaam hi nahi karna hai. Main jaise hoon khush hoon".

He told me how he was highly satisfied with the roles he played in two marathi films 'Aapla Maanus' and 'Natsamraat' based on Shakespeare's play 'King Laer' . He has not done any film or play after King Laer and is content with his 'bhaakar chutni' ( roti aur chutni).

He sounded very disappointed with the way things are happening in the country and especially in Maharashtra and said," Desh ki dashaa tabhi badal sakti hai jab humaare yuva ko gussa aaega aur voh apna gussa dikhaaenge lekin main dukhi hota hoon jab main dekhta hoon ki aaj ak yuva behkaa hua hai aur usse koi manzil nahin dikhaai deti".

I asked him if he would ever direct a film ( he had directed Prahaar almost 30 years ago) and without blinking an eye he said," Main aise bhi director har film ka hoon kyunki agar mujhe koi scene ya dialogue theek nahi lga toh main director ke kaan kheench kar usko badalne ke liye bolta hoon".

I asked him if he would ever give up films totally and he said, " Roti kamaane ke liye aur ghar chalaane ke liye filmon mein kaam toh karna hi padega lekin phir bhi main vahi filmein karoonga jo mere dil aur dimaag ko samajh mein aata hai".

NANA KO KAI LOGON NE SUDHAARNE KI YA BADALNE KI KOSHISH KI HAI , LEKIN MAIN JO NANA KO CHAALIS SAAL SE JAANTA HOON MAIN SHART LAGA SAKTA HOON KI UNHAIN KOI NAHIN BADAL SAKTA, NANA KO NANA HI BADAL SAKTE HAIN.
