The interesting play Dhappa , produced and directed by Akshay Mishra, the founder of Aum Theatre, Mumbai, who has also written the lyrics for the same has Puneet 'Duryodhana" Issar as the main actor - Jyoti Venkatesh
The play also stars Sharon Chandra,Sharon Chandra, Pavitra Sarkar and Anuradha Athlekar. The play has been produced by Aum Theatre, Mumbai. Sharon Chandra is a Fijian, who is also the co-founder of Aum Theatre, besides being a kathak dancer and actor.
The play has been set in the golden period of 1950's, a time when admiration for Bombay cinema stars was shown by lipstick stains on their Ambassador cars and the villains on the silver screen were pronounced evil for life.
It was a time when the screen death of a character portrayed by a crowd favorite was mourned openly and young girls were shunned from dancing or for that matter entering the film industry.
Says Puneet Issar, “It is an utmost delight working with Akshay Mishra and Aum Theatre Mumbai. My role in Dhappa is something that I have never explored but have always yearned for.
I remember asking Akshay why he thought of me for the role as I have always played opposite characters. I always wanted to play a soft-spoken character but never got the opportunity.
This young team is very close to me and they are my people. I am excited for everyone to see Dhappa and believe me, this magnificent play is here to stay!”
The play revolves around the intricate interrelationship between actor Kumar, his sister Iravati and Shyam, the foreign returned director.
The play premiered recently at the St Andrew's Auditorium. The play makes you determine whether Shyam is an open book or there are some chapters of his life that are torn.
Though we would have loved to carry the photographs of the play, we are not in a position to carry them because the PR guys Nikita Kamdar and Ritesh Srivastav did not bother to send us the same.
