PYAR KE SAGAR KI KOI SEEMA NAHI HOTI

Since the beginning of time , man has been trying to understand and know the mystery about love .

Some say love is God, others say love is the most powerful feeling , among both humans, animals and birds - Ali Peter John

There have been poets and philosophers who have experienced the feeling of love and have lamented their experience and cursed it , and there have been men and women who have lived and died for love .

Love has been expressed in the form of stories , novels , poems and paintings . But ,if there is one place where love is expressed the most , it is in films made all over the film making world .

Hindi films would have been nothing if it were not for the thousands of love stories it has brought alive with all its varieties and all the many colours and shades of it .....

The 50s saw filmmakers using the theme of love to make some of the best films which were simple stories told straight from the heart, without any technical gimmicks , but with some very good songs and music which are remembered and even sung by the younger generation even after sixty or fifty years .

I was listening and viewing the songs from "Seema", a black and white film made just five years after I was born .

And when I came to a song , " Tu pyar ka sagar hai, teri ek boond ke pyaase hum" , I didn't know how to react .

I must have heard the song hundreds of times and several times during this lockdown period which doesn't seem to end .

I kept listening to the song and found new meanings in every line , every tune within the song and above all the expressions and the movements of two of India's greatest actors Balraj Sahni and Nutan .

The song written by Shailendra who is as poetic and philosophical in most of his song starts with Balraj Sahni , the master of natural acting , sitting on a simple chair with a group of children sitting around him and in from of him singing in the chorus

The scene seems to be shot in an orphanage or some kind of a hostel for girls and little children .

Sahni seems to be in a mentally disturbed state and Shailendra's eloquent poetry gives full life to the feelings of Sahni .

As the song sung by Sahni , (in the voice of the well-known singer Manna Dey who has sung other popular songs for Sahni ) grows more and more pensive , thoughtful and emotional, the camera moves to a room where Nutan is reacting to every line sung by Sahni .

Her facial expressions and the natural movements of her entire body is a sight I would love to see at least a hundred times more before I am forced to stop seeing films by my health.

The song continues and Sahni is still sitting on that chair and the only movements he makes are with his hands and eyes which say much more than what Shailendra's words say in all the sincerety of the poet.

The camera goes back to the room where Nutan seems to have been kept in isolation and her reactions to the song reach a stage when as the audience you start fearing about what she is going to next .

The most significant line among all the significant lines is when Sahni sings , " idhar jhoom ke gaaye Zindagi, udhar hai maut khadi" and other lines like " "jaana hai sagar past" and "koi kya jaane kaha hai seema" and "chale jaayega yah se hum" Nutan goes into what can today be called silently hysterical .

It was perhaps for her scenes performed during this song that she was honoured with the Filmfare Award for the best actress .

This is not the only song in the film that makes a strong impact . There are other songs like "Kahaan Jaa Raha Hain"" , "Man Mohana Bade Jhoothe" and "Suno Chhoti Si Gudiya," .

As one reaches the end of the soundtrack of these songs , it becomes extremely difficult to believe that they have been written and composed by the same team of Shailendra ,Hasrat Jaipuri and Shankar - Jaikishan, the names behind the music of big commercial films like "Barsaat": "Awara":? Shri 420, Sangam, Mera Naam Joker, An evening in Paris, Brahmahchari ,Arzoo , Professor and Prince .

It shows how a creative artists can change according to the changing demands and circumstances and the team of Shankar - Jaikishan was recognised as masters of change when it came to music .

Long after listening to "Tu pyar ka sagar hai" , the haunting song stays on in the mind and the performances of Balraj Sahni and Nutan become a part of your own lives and stay on for all time .

And I am sure that the song which works or strange kind of magic in me for the last 65 years will last in l the hearts and minds of music and film lovers for as long as they live and long after they have finished living their lives
