By 2000 , Bappi had seemingly lost most of his ground and popularity . More and better noise makers had come in and forced him to take a back seat - ALi Peter John

His state was becoming like what it had become for R D Burman towards the last phase of his career and Bappi was trying to hang on to whatever came his way. The offers to score music had drastically come down and his kind of music was going out of fashion and he was looking for an alternate career or business .

It was at this desperate time in his life that politics called and he was invited to join the Bhartiya Janata Party by none other than the then chief of the party Rajnath Singh who welcomed him at a grand function , after which he had an exclusive meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his political career started with a bang .

What happened to Bappi didn't happen to any newcomer in politics . He was asked to contest the Lok Sabha elections from the Sreerampore constituency in West Bengal.

He and his family campaigned day and night , but all his efforts to win went in vain when the Trinumool Congress candidate Kalyan Banerjee trounced him and he was s broken hearted man and vowed not to have anything to do with politics again. He felt a sense of betrayal by his own people in his own land .

His defeat in politics was like a premonition of what was to come for him . There was no work coming in for him as a composer and there were days when he sat at home which was a striking contrast to the times when he had five recordings in s day and hundred and eighty six songs recorded in a year .

The only times he was seen in action was when he was at Salman Khan's Big Boss 15 show to promote his grandson Swastik's show Baccha Pa and he sang the song Oh lala oh lala for the Dirty Picture for music directors Vishal - Shekhar. And the last song he sang was Bhankas for Tiger Shroff's Baaghi 3 .

It was in 2021 that he was diagnosed for Covid and was found positive and spent a long time in hospital and recovered .

But he continued to have several lung complication ( he neither smoked nor drank ) and was again admitted to the Criticare Hospital in Juhu and was discharged on February 14 , but his health deteriorated and he was rushed back to the same hospital were all afforts made to save him failed and he died within hours .

His body was kept waiting as his son Bappa had to arrive from America and when he arrived in the early hours in the morning on February ,17 , he was taken to Lahiri House to have a dharshan of his father who was his hero and from Lahiri House he traveled with his father's body to the Pawan Hans cremetorim where he was destined to set his father's body on fire and be reduced to ashes as a limited number of his father's admirers looked on helplessly and wondered about the futility of life and the ruthless force of death
