Truth is always bitter. Whether revealed immediately or after fifty years, it leaves a deep impact on relationships. Based on this core idea, writer and director Saurabh Shukla brings the highly emotional film Jab Khuli Kitaab, which is an adaptation of his own play of the same name. The film had its world premiere two years ago at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. Now, it is streaming on the OTT platform ZEE5 from March 6. Anyone who wants to understand the value of relationships and the depth of a mother’s emotions should watch this film.

Story
The film begins in Ranikhet, Uttarakhand, where Anusuya (Dimple Kapadia) has been in a coma for two months. Her husband Gopal Nautiyal (Pankaj Kapur), is devotedly taking care of her. Their two sons, Param (Sameer Soni) and Dholu, Param’s wife Farnaz (Nauheed Cyrusi), daughter Sujata, her husband Jignesh (Sunil Palwal), and their children have all gathered as doctors have given up hope.
One day, unexpectedly, Anusuya regains consciousness. After waking up, she reveals a long-hidden secret to her husband Gopal. The revelation is so shocking that Gopal decides to initiate divorce proceedings against his partner of 55 years. At the same time, he tries to keep the rest of the family unaware of this deep secret between him and Anusuya.

Soon, turmoil spreads through the household. The children are confused and disturbed by the sudden turn of events. During the divorce process, Gopal meets lawyer R. K. Negi (Aparshakti Khurana). The conversations that take place in his office become some of the most engaging moments of the film. Through these discussions, old wounds resurface and Anusuya’s truth slowly comes to light.
What follows is an emotional, sometimes humorous journey of Gopal and Anusuya’s life together, as they navigate the difficult paths of their relationship and try to rediscover the meaning of love and companionship. Whether the divorce ultimately happens or not, and whether the children learn the truth, can only be discovered by watching the film.

Review
Before the interval, the film progresses mainly through the conversations between Pankaj Kapur and Dimple Kapadia. However, after the interval, the pace noticeably slows down. Some emotional scenes stretch for too long, making the film feel like a stage drama. At several points, the depth of the characters and their conflicts does not feel entirely convincing.
The film can feel boring in parts, as certain scenes are unnecessarily prolonged. Yet, the filmmaker succeeds in portraying the realities of aging relationships without artificial sweetness or exaggerated drama. Unfortunately, due to its wandering screenplay, the film does not fully live up to the promise of its title.

Saurabh Shukla’s script attempts to explore the complexities of a decades-long marriage, the dangers of oversharing, and the difficulties of separation in later life. One of the biggest weaknesses of the film is that the narrative loses its rhythm within the first fifteen minutes. The writer-director also does not delve deeply into the roots of Gopal’s hostility toward Anusuya or the reasons behind her actions.
Instead of fully exploring the complex aspects of separation after 55 years of marriage, the slow-paced film turns into a rather straightforward narrative. The story also reflects a somewhat conservative mindset where divorce is treated as a negative concept, summed up in lawyer Negi’s advice to Anusuya: “Stop breaking other people’s homes and build your own.” Additionally, the subplot involving Dholu distracts from the main storyline.
However, viewers who enjoy dialogue-driven storytelling may appreciate the film, while audiences from Generation Z might find it slow and less engaging.
Acting

In the world of acting, Pankaj Kapur remains unparalleled. Through his performance, he not only brings the character of Gopal Nautiyal to life but also lives it with remarkable intensity. In every scene, he portrays the character’s pain, anger, and confusion with honesty. His performance is subtle yet deeply impactful.

Dimple Kapadia also delivers a memorable performance as Anusuya. She beautifully expresses dignity, regret, courage, and tenderness through her portrayal. The chemistry between the two is not romantic; instead, it reflects a long, weary yet deeply connected partnership, which becomes the soul of the film.

Aparshakti Khurana, as the somewhat clumsy lawyer Negi, manages to grab attention in a few scenes. Sameer Soni leaves a mark in the role of Param. Nauheed Cyrusi, Sunil Palwal, Devyani Ratanpal, and Mansi Parekh also deliver decent performances.
