The Story (Param Sundari film story)
Films dealing with cultural crossovers and love have been made in the past, (Param Sundari Sidharth Janhvi chemistry) but they rarely found success. Now, producer Dinesh Vijan brings Param Sundari, a romantic comedy with the same premise—where the boy is a Punjabi lad from Delhi, and the girl is a Malayali from Kerala. Unfortunately, the film disappoints at every level—storytelling, direction, and execution.
Param (Sidharth Malhotra), the son of a Delhi-based industrialist (Sanjay Kapoor), is a Punjabi munda who has failed at multiple startups and app ventures. Now, he dreams of (Param Sundari romantic comedy 2025) creating a soulmate-finding app, for which he asks his father for ₹5 crores. His father refuses but challenges him instead: if Param can find his soulmate through his app within a month, he will invest in it.
Through the app, Param meets Sundari (Janhvi Kapoor), a Malayali girl from Kerala. Sundari is independent, confident, and passionate about dance, with little interest in social media or algorithms. Accompanied by his friend Jaggi (Manjot Singh), Param travels to Kerala, where Sundari lives in a lavish house, renting out rooms. He and Jaggi move in as tenants. Sundari lives there with her younger sister (Inayat Verma). Slowly, Param tries to win her heart, and despite the stark cultural differences, the two grow close—until it is revealed that Sundari is already engaged to Venu (Sidharth Shankar). A series of events follow, and eventually, Param and Sundari end up getting married. (Param Sundari box office prediction)
The Review (Param Sundari review)
The story and screenplay are full of confusion. The writers and director failed to capture the essence of Malayali society, culture, and festivals. Instead of giving the narrative proper treatment, they filled it with absurd references to dating apps and algorithms.
The film has neither real romance nor genuine comedy. Director Tushar Jalota (of Dasvi fame) proves here that filmmaking may not be his forte. He completely fails to bring life to the story. From the beginning, it feels less like a rom-com and more like a bodybuilding contest showcase.
Sidharth Malhotra spends much of his time flaunting his bare torso instead of acting. Half-hearted references are made to Kalaripayattu moves, Kathakali masks, and the story of Onam—explained as if to North Indians entirely unfamiliar with South Indian traditions. The portrayal of cultural differences is highly superficial: “Andhra means Allu, Tamil Nadu means Rajini, Kerala means Mohanlal, Karnataka means Yash.” For Punjabis, Sanjay Kapoor as Param’s father brings in the stereotypical “Chak De Fatte” vibe.
All of this feels bizarre. The pacing before the interval is painfully slow; only at interval-point does a solid plot hook finally arrive, but even then, the lack of freshness is glaring. The film repeatedly falls back on cliché rom-com formulas, and its depiction of cultural clash is hackneyed. The climax does manage to entertain, but it’s too little, too late. (Param Sundari director Tushar Jalota)
On the technical side, the work is passable. Kerala’s beautiful locations are captured well by the cinematographer, but the music is below average. Aside from the visuals, the film falters in almost every other department. Even the depiction of Malayali society and language is shallow. Sundari, for instance, speaks fluent Hindi throughout, which feels jarringly unrealistic.
Acting
Despite being in the industry for over 12 years, Sidharth Malhotra still hasn’t mastered even the ABCs of acting. As Param, he delivers a terrible performance. Apart from looking fit and occasionally handsome, (Param Sundari song Pardesiya) he contributes nothing of value. His acting is as unsuccessful as the character he plays.
Janhvi Kapoor looks beautiful as Sundari but fails to embody the essence of a Malayali woman. She needs to seriously work on her acting skills. Inayat Verma (the younger sister) manages to grab attention despite limited screen time. Manjot Singh, Sidharth Shankar, and Abhishek Banerjee get little scope, while Sanjay Kapoor delivers an average performance as Param’s father.
