The dreaded ‘dwarfed’ midget-villain traditional South Indian-underworld-don Vishnu character played by versatile actor Riteish Deshmukh in the action-violence-romantic drama ‘Marjaavaan’,  is being avidly speculated amongst  movie-goers. While some presume it’s possibly a take-off on Kamal Hassan’s ‘Appu Raja’(1990), others surmise it’s inspired by Shah Rukh Khan’s character in the recent  ‘Zero’ . When I spoke to innovative writer-director Milap Milan Zaveri of ‘Marjaavaan’, this is what he had to reveal.  “Amazing as it may sound, 50 percent of our movie, the dedicated Riteish walked on his knees, to portray his vertically-challenged three-feet tall negative character. Like the way legendary Kamal Hassan had done, but the role is not inspired by Appu Raja   The balance 50 percent is with the help of hi-tech VFX-computer-graphics. Today’s young and old audiences who are addicted to watching  the TV series ‘Game of Thrones’  and love the real-life midget American actor Peter Dinklage and his popular character ‘Tyrion’, will also relate instantly to the short-statured  ‘kameena’ arrogant avataar of Riteish. In fact, I used to fondly call Ritesh as the ‘Chhota Gabbar’.  Honestly speaking, I had heard from my friend Tushar,  this trivia,  that way back in late ‘80s , Subhash Ghai was directing a movie ‘Devaa’ which apparently had this midget actor Lilliput playing the negative character. That film unfortunately was shelved. But this ‘bauna badmaash’ quirky element had stuck in my mind.  Despite all the high-octane action-violence in ‘Marjaavaan’,  it’s also an intense musical love-story and essentially a family-entertainer,” insists Milap ( of ‘Satyameva Jayate’ hit film fame).
