The more I hear and witness some success stories in this very unusual industry in which I have spent my entire life, the more I believe that there is something Powers that shape the destinies of some men and women. I seriously don't believe in lofty ideas such as Destiny and dreams coming true, but I am compelled or inspired to believe that there is some mystical truth that is beyond human understanding that guides some people's lives. Surely, that power must be partial, otherwise why should only a few be so successful and the rest spend their whole lives chasing success?
This thought has been haunting me for a very long time and it keeps cropping up in my mind all the time that I have come to know the truth behind the success of a person like Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
I was not aware of his background before meeting him as an assistant to Vidhu Vinod Chopra during the making of his ambitious film "1942 - A Love Story". There was something special about this young man that appealed to me and I asked my friend, well-known choreographer, Bhushan Lakhandri, who was working on those dances in the film, to be a young assistant. He was Sanjay Leela Bhansali, he was born in a middle class Gujarati family, his father working in the industry and his mother, Leela Bhansali, was an actress and a very good dancer who could also sing very well. Sanjay was raised mostly by his mother, who had a strong influence on him and was the source of inspiration from whom he took interest in dance and music.
By the time Sanjay was in his twenties, he was interested in joining films and Vidhu saw more talent in him than a simple assistant and took him on as part of his directorial team. It was during the dance shoot in the film that Vidhu gave him the liberty to direct one of the songs picturized on Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala. The way he portrayed the song appealed to Anil, Manisha, Vidhu and the entire team.
It was time to give credit to the people who worked for the film and Vidhu wanted to give full credit to Sanjay and asked Sanjay what name he should write for him and without thinking twice, Sanjay said, "Sanjay Leela Bhansali". But Vidhu knew that Leela was his mother's name, but Sanjay insisted that his name be spelled as Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It was a way of paying his respect to his mother to whom he owed his life and all that he had learned in life and when the song picturized by him was released and people in the industry came to know that Sanjay Leela Bhansali His name became very popular in the industry but very few knew that Sanjay had a fire that was going to burn for a very long time and was a name to be respected and rewarded.
He got little time to impress a producer like Jhamu Sugandha who encouraged better films to give him his first break in a subject he loved very much. And Sanjay Leela Bhansali was the director of "Khamoshi - The Musical", starring Salman Khan, Manisha Koirala, Seema Biswas (Bandit Queen), Nana Patekar and the most popular dancer of all time, Helen as Manisha's mother. The film could have created wonders, but Sanjay Leela Bhansali was recognized as a fine and artistic director who knew how to make a good film that people would love. It was his mother, Leela, who was eager for her son to take his first big step.
But little did his mother or anyone else know that the man was about to scale new Everest as a director and was the founder of his own company SLB Productions and his talent was recognized when he won four National Awards and ten Won Filmfare Awards and topped it with Padma Shri.
Striving for excellence, experimentation and doing nothing but nothing but excellence led Sanjay and his banner to make some of the most memorable films during the last twenty years, making a great and varied kind of films. Very few films produced by him or under his banner failed to live up to the expectations but throughout his career he is known for the excellent films he made. A quick run through of his films can give one an idea of how the man's mind and heart work and how he is a fine and very good actor and creative person to give his best to every film he makes. Just think of the films that she has made and is known for till now and you can imagine how she approaches cinema and finds new ways to give direction to Hindi films which has made her a global icon. Known as one of the best films ever made, such as "Khamoshi: The Musical", "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam", "Devdas" (this was the fourth time the theme was made, but they did it with big and luxurious sets and With grand music, apart from stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, gave its own touch of class) Black", "Saawariya" (a break for two of his assistants who worked during the making of "Black", Ranbir Kapoor and worked with Sonam Kapoor
