She was the most popular child artist of the sixties and seventies. There were stories about her coming from a very poor family and who was being looked after by her mother, Mrs. Kamala Thakur who once wanted to be an actress herself but had failed. She thought of making her ambition come true through her beautiful daughter with green eyes. The daughter who was popularly known as Baby Sarika was a little success story till she was about twelve…

She then vanished from the scene only to return a few years later as the heroine of a film called “Geet Gaata Chal” with Sachin who was also a child artist during the time of Baby Sarika. The film produced by Rajshri was a surprise and a big hit which ran for more than a year. Both Sachin and Sarika were stars and went their own ways after doing a couple of films together…

Sarika was an actress in the big league and did some big films with her mother, Mrs. Thakur still guiding her. She was a sensitive actress and was at her best in a film called “Grihapravesh” also starring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore, a team which had done more than ten successful films together, but Sarika could still make a place of her own…

Things were going very well Sarika and her mother had an apartment in “Bhanu Apartments” in Juhu. But it was while Sarika was reaching for the sky of success that she decided to do a film without consulting her mother. The film directed by actor Jalal Agha was “Nirvaan”. Amol Palekar and Tinnu Anand were her co-stars. The film was a very good film, but Sarika had to do a scene in which she had to reveal her breasts for a few minutes. Her mother was horrified when she saw what her daughter had done and they had a show down. Their bickering continued till Sarika walked out on her mother in just the clothes she was dressed in and never went back…

She had to start life all over again. She lived as a paying guest in several places and lived without work for several months till she was forced to play small roles in big films and had to do some very daring scenes, wear scanty clothes and finally ended up playing the vamp. She was going downhill when she had a chance meeting with Kamal Haasan who was trying his luck in Hindi films. He had just broken up with his first wife, Vani Ganpathy and was an eligible bachelor again. Their meetings led to their falling in love and Sarika was pregnant and living in an apartment in a building called “Gulistan” at Seven Bungalows. They had their first love child, a daughter they named Shruti. Kamal then took Sarika to Chennai and she was accepted as “Amma” by the millions of Kamal’s fans. They had their second daughter, Akshara after which they got married officially…

Sarika was happy working as the costume designer of films made by Kamal and the two daughters were growing up when the couple abruptly decided to separate. Sarika came back to Mumbai and lived in a friend’s apartment in a building called “Varun” in Versova where she was supposed to have been born. Her little daughters were with her for some time but they were in Chennai with their father soon. Sarika came back to acting and came up with a brilliant performance in a National Award winning film, “Parzania” and she decided to stay back and pursue her career again…

Kamal had another woman in his life (Gautami, an actress) and the girls grew up as multi-talented artists, Shruti Haasan who has made a name both in the South and in Hindi films and Akshara has just made her debut in “Shamitabh” in which she is teamed up with Dhanush and has some very emotional scenes with Amitabh Bachchan, but has proved that she has it to make it. She has a strong resemblance to her mother, Sarika down to her complexion and green eyes…

They had kept away from each other for long and it was a great sight to see the broken family have a fleeting re-union at the function Amitabh Bachchan hosted to honour Ilaiyaraaja for completing a thousand films as a composer. Their coming together was an emotional moment which they would or should remember wherever they are and at any time
