Say No To Drugs, Say TV Actors

With so many youngsters turning to drugs, TV actors talk to JYOTHI VENKATESH about how these should be avoided at any cost. Here is what they have to say.

It is very sad actually, it's just spreading like wildfire. I think if they can think about doing other things such as meditation, yoga, dancing or any other activity which will help them to come out of their addiction, it would be helpful. I think there is no end to drugs, and it damages your entire system from within. And as a mother, I have that fear for my child too. I think the main root cause is peer pressure and I remember during my time, that is in the 90's, peer pressure was all about doing well in school and college or in your career. Now, it is all about looking nice, having more followers on Instagram. It has become more materialistic. And I think children should confide in their parents but I don't think they would. And it is something that every parent will discourage, but I think parents are the best people who can help their children to come out of it. And I think since the last 20 years, sorry to say this but everything from the west has been coming to our country. And it is really sad that they are taking everyting best from us like culture ie. yoga, becoming more spiritual, becoming vegetarian. They are taking things from us and we are taking things from them. I don't know where are we headed.

In India, it is an issue since a long back. I personally think that is an issue that has been there forever. The root cause is stress and frustration which one is not able to cope up with. Everyone is looking for a way out and some people find it in these places whereas, some people are fortunate enough to find alternate ways. Everyone is an addict and it depends on what you have turned to. And good parenting really matters a lot and in the 21st century I would suggest every parent should have a friend like bond as I do with my parents. And I think parents are the best people who can give you the right advice. And eventually, I think the youth of our country is so intelligent and smart that they know what is good and bad for them. They know what is drug substance and abuse. At the end of the day more and more awareness needs to be spread. But I think it needs to be rooted down to a deeper level. And I think the country needs to adapt to the change where they need to change the overall scenario and environment and make it a better place to live in.

Tinaa Datta  I think there should be some very strict actions taken against those who still sell drugs in our country. The teenage years are a phase where a person gets deviated very easily, so in order to avoid that right from the younger days, children need to know about drugs and their consequences. Parents should go ahead and win the trust of their children and make them understand about it's ramifications.

I think it is horrible. When you are taking drugs, you are not only ruining your life but you are ruining the lives of the people in your family. And the main root cause has to be stress. It is a highly competitive world where we are living in. Everyone needs an external factor to find happiness so drugs is an escape for these people who do not have the will power to accept the challenges of the world. But, I hope they realize the fact that this easy way out will lead them nowhere but to a dead end. I think teenagers should confide in their parents, but moreover, I would just request one thing to the parents reading this article that be comfortable in talking to your kids and be open to them. Things like 'sex' and 'drugs' are two taboos in our society, more in India because of which kids are more curious about the same and you need to offer them the proper guidance and make them comfortable talking to you. They will look out for advice in the outer world, which may not be right for them. And I think spreading awareness is through parents and teachers. And in their formative years itself, if we educate them about the side-effects of drugs very openly then I think the child will never indulge in these kinds of substances.

I feel it is very sad that the young generation is leading towards destruction by consuming drugs and other intoxications. I myself condemn this because initially, people see it as an alternative to escape from their problems. And I feel people should build an amicable bond with their parents as they will guide them in the best way possible. I feel the government needs to come up with stringent laws when it comes to things like drugs. And spread its awareness and educate the youth in their formative years of development.
