Skin Donation finds a champion in award-winning campaigner Laxmi Agarwal

India’s award-winning campaigner and acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal associates with Rotary Bangalore Midtown as the official Cause Ambassador for skin donation. As a cause ambassador, she will be participating and flagging off a 5 km Walkathon organized by Rotary Bangalore Midtown in association with Prestige Group and Ashirvad Pipes on June 09, 2019 at 6:30 AM from St. Joseph India High School Ground, Bangalore.

Laxmi Agarwal will play an instrumental role in educating and informing citizens about skin donation through her journey. The association will see Laxmi as a force of inspiration and motivation to encourage citizens to pledge their skin for donation. Laxmi has previously won various awards such as International women empowerment award 2019 from IWES, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation and UNICEF for her campaign Stop Sale Acid. In 2014, Laxmi received the International Woman of Courage award by then the US first lady Michelle Obama.

Skin donation is a hugely ignored initiative in India. Society is still largely unaware of skin donation and it is critical to inform and educate people that skin can also be donated and break taboos that surround this conversation. There are 70 lakhs burn injuries in India annually, out of which 7 lakhs require hospital admission and 1.4 lakh are fatal. Of the 1.4 lakh deaths, 90,000 of those affected are women. Burn victims require special care and treatment including isolation, and counselling to overcome the trauma.

Rotary Bangalore Midtown along with Victoria Hospital Bangalore had set-up India’s first skin bank in 2016. They have been working very closely, for the past couple of years towards creating awareness around skin donation and sensitizing the public about the ordeals and challenges that burn victims face.

Come be a part of the walkathon and take the pledge to donate your skin to ensure a better future for the burn victims and survivors.
