Sooryavansham Completes 2 Decades In Bollywood

Sony MAX, India’s number one Hindi movie channel celebrates the 20-year milestone of one of their most watched movie, Sooryavansham on Saturday, May 25 2019 at 12 pm. When it first release in theaters it received a lukewarm response at the box office but over the years it has achieved a cult status due to its long running stint on the channel. The film has in fact, become an internet sensation due to numerous memes and social media trends for its seemingly never-ending run on Sony MAX securing a firm place in pop culture. An emotional potboiler with a heavy focus on family and relationships, the film marked the Bollywood debut of Telugu director E. V. V. Satyanarayana and remains his first and only directorial in Hindi. Amitabh Bachchan’s performance in dual role was appreciated by the critics and till date remains one of the memorable double role characters. Sooryavansham is a musical melodrama set against the backdrop of rural India.

Based on the relationship between a father and son in a rural Indian social set-up, Sooryavansham is a complete family entertainer. The movie revolves around the head of the Sooryavansh clan, Thakur Bhanupratap Singh (Amitabh Bachchan), who has a strained relationship with the youngest of his three sons, Heera (also played by Amitabh Bachchan). Heera’s decision to go against his will and marry the girl he loves spites his father. However, Heera has a deep respect for his father and tries different, heartwarming ways to mend the broken relationship. It is this rootedness of the film, which continues to appeal to the audiences even today and has made this a fan favorite for the viewers of Sony MAX. It is interesting to note that Rekha has dubbed for both Jayasudha as well as Soundarya in the film, which remains the only Hindi film in which the late actress Soundarya had acted. Originally the makers toyed with the idea of casting real life father and son Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan as the father and son in the film in which Amitabh Bachchan played a double role as the father as well as the son..

The film was supported by the stellar performances of actors including Anupam Kher, Kader Khan, Bindu, Jayasudha and Soundarya. The film had music by Anu Malik and lyrics by Sameer.
