After a lot of Hospitals, Vaidyas, Worshipping, Temples over the years, they finally had a Mangli after 12 years. One of the biggest penances that Mangli's mother did was to not wear footwear for 12 years. Her sacrifice led to the magic that is Mangli, but Mangli's struggle started right from trying to find a place in her mother's heart. Her mother was furious that in spite of continuous struggle for 12 years they had a girl rather than a boy. So much so that she didn't see Mangli's face for 3 days! What a tragedy for a woman to not understand another woman. Mangli got the eternal companionship of the two struggles - of poverty and her womanhood to weigh her down. But she also got the uplifting companionship of her melodious voice, her supportive father and the heritage of the beautiful, ancient folk songs of the Gor-Banjara community.
