A special screening of iconic Marathi film VandeMataram (1948) is organized to celebrate birth anniversary of beloved author, actor and musician Purushottam Laxman Deshpande at National Film Archive of India on Saturday 9th November at 5 PM. In another highlight, rare footage of playing of Harmonium by PL Deshpande is also to be screened at the event. Popularly known as “Pu. La. Deshpande” or “PuLa”, he was noted for his sarcastic observational humour. He made a mark across the several media including literature, theater and cinema.VandeMataram (1948), directed by Ram Gabale is the first film where the trinity of P.L.Deshpande, G.D. Madgulkar and Sudhir Phadke come together. Starring P.L. Deshpande and Sunitatai Deshpande in the lead roles, it was based on the freedom struggle and Quit India Movement of 1942. The film highlights the contribution of an unknown freedom fighter who hailed from the village of Sonsali located in the Shirali district. This film is embellished with the immortal song VedMantrahunAmhaVandyaVandeMataram written by G.D. Madgulkar, composed and sung by Sudhir Phadke.Interestingly, considered as lost, the footage of the film has recently been acquired by NFAI. This will be a great opportunity for PL Deshpande’s fans to watch this rare footage on the big screen along with footage featuring Harmonium playing by PL Deshpande. He was a proficient Harmonium player and had accompanied many stalwart classical singers in professional and private concerts. Entry is free and open to all.
