Acclaimed author and screenplay writer of Never Kiss your Best Friend Sumrit Shahi is all geared up to play Holi and is looking forward to the festival. Interestingly, he recalls a sweet childhood memory which can throw anyone in the pool of nostalgia."My fondest childhood memory was having those neighborhood battles with your gang of friends and other kids who you were not friendly with on Holi," he says and adds on a lighter note that, "Uri movie came way later, we did our surgical strikes on Holi with balloons. I really miss that because we would stay awake the previous night and fill water balloons and prepare dirty permanent colour. It was very savage and I miss that savage me."Expressing his views on water scarcity, the 26-year- old writer says, "I will be honest, I am very guilty of wasting water on Holi as a child but as you grow up, you realise that we need to save water. There is a complete, possible way of playing Holi without water and water is scarce right now. So, wasting it for a festival does not make sense."While there is a general awareness around Corona Virus and many people are choosing to stay indoor, Sumrit believes it's a personal opinion.
"I think the biggest misconception is that corona virus can just spread in the public space. The idea is to not touch surfaces or People in public places. So, yes a public place can be hazardous right now. Having said that it also means that in general you don't go to a park, a restaurant or a movie theatre where community engagement happens. It's to each their own. It's like if you are not playing Holi, then you might as well not go to theatres. I am going to play Holi but I am going to be cautious. I won't touch anyone I don't know. But I don't know how practical this is, it's totally a personal call," he says.Holi as a festival is hugely shown in movies and television from a long time. Now, as a new segment of a 'web audience' has emerged, one wonders if festivals in web shows will be welcomed with equal enthusiasm.
"I think what Holi brings in is a lot of visual colour, which is an exciting thing to watch. So, in any medium be it television, films or web, if it takes the story forward and adds to the writing content, then why not. It has to be a plot driven thing," says Sumrit, who's next web show is Dev DD will soon hit the net.So, what plans for Sumrit? "There are too many confusing plans right now. But I am mostly going to hang at home with my friends and then go and check out one of the Holi parties around for a bit. Once you grow up, you like it low key so I am very happy not planning it as opposed to planning it a night before as a kid," he says.
