Remembering Deenanath Mangeshkar: A Family's Tradition and Legacy
Deenanath Mangeshkar died at a very young age. After deteriorating financial condition, Deenanath took recourse to alcohol and said goodbye to this world at the age of just 41.
After the death of her father at a very young age, the entire burden of the house fell on the elder daughter Lata i.e. Lata Mangeshkar. A few years after her father's death, Lata's mother suggested Lata to celebrate her father's death anniversary. For which Lata ji i.e. Didi called her father's disciple and asked her to perform on his death anniversary. While narrating this story, Didi's younger brother i.e. Hridaynath Mangeshkar further says "Didi followed this tradition for 40 years and after that one day she told me that now you do this work. I also did something with all my heart on his death anniversary for the last few years. We did it for years. One day we all sat down and decided that we would open a public trust through which we would celebrate our father's death anniversary every year because it is not within the power of any one person to do so."
These things were happening on the occasion of the 82nd death anniversary of Deenanath Mangeshkar. Deenanath Award is given every year on the occasion of Deenanath's death anniversary. This award was started by the Government of Madhya Pradesh in the name of Deenanath, who said goodbye to the world on 24 April 1942. This award is given to people associated with the field of music.
This year, veteran actors Amitabh Bachchan, Randeep Hooda, Padmini Kolhapuri, and singer-composer AR Rahman also attended the occasion. On this special occasion, Lata Mangeshkar's Sister Usha Mangeshkar was also present and honored all the awardees with her own hands.
The first award was given to the Deep Stambh Foundation. Which is the first such organization in the country that not only provides free but also residential training to all types of disabled people. The founder of this institute located in Pune and Jalgaon is Mr. Yajurvend Mahajan. Let us tell you that he was awarded the Asha Bhosle Award.
This year the Vaag Vilasini Award was given to Mrs. Manjari Madhukar. Manjari ji, honored with many awards, has mainly dedicated her writing work to devotion, devotee poets, historical characters, revolutionaries, and patriots. If we talk about the main works of Manjari ji, special among them are the commentary on Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta and the books written on Shri Ram.
Padmini Kolhapuri, who has worked in more than 75 films, is also honored with three Filmfare Awards. On this special occasion, Padmini Kolhapuri was honored with the Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Award at the hands of Usha Mangeshkar.
Giving credit for this award to her parents, Padmini says, “I would like to give credit to my parents for whatever I am today. If one has the blessings of parents, a person can touch the sky. Whatever I am today, Asha Bhosle, a member of the Mangeshkar family, also has a hand in it. Whatever I am today is because of them. It was Asha Ji who brought me into this industry. I would like to tell you one more thing on this occasion, ten years ago my father was awarded the Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Award for his contribution to singing. This award is very important for me because my father got it and today I am getting it. This is my family's reward."
Actor, writer, producer, and director Randeep Hooda was also honored with the Master Deenanath Award on this occasion. This award was given to him for his film Veer Savarkar. While receiving this award, Hooda talked about the love of the Mangeshkar family and the Savarkar family and also told some unique stories related to them.
The only Indian whose name includes 2 Oscar Awards, one BAFTA, 2 Grammy Awards, six National Awards, and 32 Filmfare Awards, and has also been awarded with Padma Bhushan. We are talking about singer and composer AR Rahman. Who has raised the name of their art and country not only in the country but also abroad? On this occasion, AR Rahman was honored with the Master Deenanath Award for his contribution to the field of music.
On the occasion of receiving this honor, Rehman said that he has always been inspired by the Mangeshkar family and he tells the same to his children.
Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award is given every year to a person who has set high standards in his field and has brought pride to society and the country. This year, megastar of the century Amitabh Bachchan was honored with this award.
Receiving this award, Amitabh Bachchan says, “It is a great privilege for me that today's award has been dedicated to me, but I always did not consider myself worthy of receiving such an award. Hridaynath ji had tried very hard to be present here today. Last year also they invited me but last time I said that I would not be able to come as I was unwell. I was healthy but did not want to come. This year I had no excuse so I had to accept.” Amitabh Bachchan further says, “Lata ji has always had affection and love for my family and me and I cannot describe the amount of respect she has given us.”
Amitabh says that once he asked his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan to tell him something about Lata ji, in response to which his father said only one word and that was 'honey stream'.
On this occasion, Usha Mangeshkar ji, daughter of Deenanath Mangeshkar ji and sister of Lata Mangeshkar ji, said, “So many big giants are sitting on this stage, very big people are sitting in their work and I am the youngest. I have not done anything so big that I should sit here and talk to you people. But Asha Tai was not well, so Usha Tai was made to sit. I can't do his work because he talks very well, and I can't do it. I am afraid to speak. The ceremony held today was very nice and I enjoyed it very much. This ceremony was heart-touching, especially since Amitabh ji was given the Lifetime Achievement Award by me. I felt very happy that the award in the name of Bharat Ratna Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar, who was the Swar Samrat, was given to the dance emperor of India and the world. Rahman Ji sitting here has gone far ahead in music, I congratulate him a lot.”
