In 1990, Mandakini married Dr. Kagyur T. Rinpoche Thakur, a former Buddhist monk from Himachal Pradesh. Dr. Thakur gained fame in his childhood as the baby featured in Murphy Radio advertisements during the 1970s and 1980s.
