Thank You, Mr Bachchan, For Giving Him A Genuine Reason To Smile And Be Proud

Years after neglecting the man called Dhundiraj Govind Phalke who made cinema a reality in India and who had to die penniless and poverty-stricken outside a popular studio in Bombay, the government of India woke up to realise and recognise his contribution to Indian cinema and started the highest award for excellence and contribution to cinema in his name, now for the last fifty years known as the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

There have been many winners of this prestigious award, some genuine, some controversial, some accepted without any questions asked and some which have stirred a hornet's nest.

Some which have been given for one's personal contribution and some which have been given on political, caste and regional lines, I am not talking in the air, I know of such dirty games being played even in a sacred and solemn issue like these awards which should be our pride, but are sometimes not....

But as I write these lines, Amitabh Bachchan walks down the steps after being the 50th recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and it is a very beautiful coincidence that Amitabh is receiving the highest award in cinema when he himself is completing 50 years as an actor in Indian cinema.

Amitabh is now seventy-seven, goes to receive the award with all other on last Sunday, remembered 22, but a sudden bout of fever and other complications led to his staying back and the I&B Ministry and president Ram Kovind were kind to meet changes to hold the function today, December 28.

Amitabh, like always was all humble and grateful for his being chosen for the highest award in the country for cinema, but he also said he was a little worried because somewhere he believed that an award like this was like a hint to the winner to say that he had done enough and now it was time to go home and rest, Amitabh said without mixing voice that he would still like to be given some more time because he had some more ambitions, desires and goals to fulfil.

Who is stopping you, Mr. Bachchan? Who can stop you, Mr. Bachchan? You have got on your side. You have destiny on your side. You have time on your side. And above all you have the love of the people of five generations on your side.
