The 12th BIFFES 2020 started with the screening of Latvian movie ‘Oleg’ by Juris Kursietis and Chinese movie ‘To live to sing’ by Johnny Ma. The films ‘Hava, Maryam, Ayesha’ and ‘Born in Jerasulem and Still Alive’ witnessed full house. The award-winning Korean movie ‘Parasite’ directed by Bong Joon Ho was the most popular movie of the day. A workshop ‘Planning Computer Graphics for Feature films-Visual Breakdown’, conducted by Sanath P. C, attracted a crowd of film enthusiasts. VFX and the possible scenarios of where it can be utilized was the focus of the session. In addition to which the application of visual effects’ ability to transform a movie into a whole new experience and make it magical was put forth.

The Open forum organized by Federation of Film Societies of India Southern Region, in collaboration with Bengaluru International Film, Department of Information and Public Relations Festival, and Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy. Inaugurated by Suneel Puranik, Chairman, KCA. The topic discussed was: The role of KCA in promoting cinema culture through festival.The press conference was addressed by Siddhartha Thripathi Director of Dog and his Man (Chattisgarh), Paul Ireland- Director of Measure for Measure (Australia), Shaheed Ahmed Lou director of Cinema Donkey(Iran), TanelToom, Director of Truth and Justice (Estonia). The Directors spoke about how their films depicted different perspectives of humans and society. Among the films showcased during the week long 12th BIFFES were Danish movie ‘Uncle’ by Frelle Petersen, Chinese movie ‘Summer of Changsha’ by Zu Feng and German movie ‘Cherry Blossoms & Demons’ by Doris Dorrie. The movies ‘It Must Be Heaven’and ‘You Will Die at Twenty’ had movie buffs queuing up to catch the movie.‘Parasite’ and ‘Pain and Glory’ drew even more attention with both earning full house.

‘Making of Hollywood Blockbuster: The Lion King’ attracted a crowd of aspiring film makers and movie enthusiasts. The event was headed by Biren Ghose- Country head, Technicolor India, MPC Film. The session gave insights on transition from 2D to 3D animation, and all the minute details that goes into making an animated movie was shed light upon. The session also highlighted how Bengaluru has been an epicenter for the creation of major gaming VFX and popular animated movies.

The press conference was addressed by Girish Kasaravalli, Director of ‘Illiralaare Allige Hogalaare’, R. Madhuchandra- Director of Selfie Mummy Google Daddy, Sajin Baabu- the young director of Biriyaani and Tymur Yashchenko- Director of U311 Cherkasy (Ukrania). Directors gave a gist of their movies and spoke about their inspirations behind it.Ukranian filmmaker, Tymur Yashchenko, gave a unique insight to the current political scenario of Ukraine and how it changed the film making environment of the country.

Censorship in cinema is an obsolete concept in the age of new media was the topic atr the second Open Forum. The guests were Girish Kasaravalli, N. Vidyashankar, Artisitic Director BIFFES, KCN Chandrasekhar- Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, Naganna- Vice President, - Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, Dir. B.S. Lingadevara, N Shashidhara, Federation of Film Society of India (FFSI), Bh SS Prakash Reddy, FFSI Hyderabad. ‘Future of digital screening- an over the top perspective’, an interactive session conducted by Suryanarayanan, creator of AHA app; an exclusive Telugu content platform with an extensive range of movies and original web series just a click away, spoke about how the platform, with the help of technology eases access to files and storages online.

The screening of French movie ‘The Dazzeled’ by Sarah Sucoand Khmer and Thai movie ‘Buoyancy’ by Rodd Rathjen , ‘The Painted Bird’ and ‘Papicha’ witnessed massive crowd. A seminar; ‘125 years of Evolution in Cinema’ presented by H.N.Narahari Rao, spoke about the world history of motion pictures and advancements in film making. With his appealing presentation he conveyed the essence of historic as well as modern cinema. H.N. Narahari was felicitated after the seminar. A press conference was addressed by Vijayalakshmi Singh, Director of ‘Yaanaa’ (Kannada),  Suman Nagarkar, Producer of ‘Brahmi’ (Kannada), Geetha J, Director of ‘Run Kalyani’(Malayalam) and Suneel Puranik, Chairman, KCA. The directors spoke about Empowering Women, and about the extra work Female film makers have to put in to create and market their movies.FIPRESCI in association with BIFFES organized a felicitation program to honour H.N.Narahari Rao, Secretary of FIPRESCI, India and Vice President, Federation of Film Socities of India, Ms. Aruna Vasudev, President, FIPRESCI, India and Sudhir Nandgaonkar, Secretary of FIPRESCI, India. The other dignitaries present were, V.K.Joseph, President (in office) FIPRESCI, India, Premandra Mazumder, Secretary(in office) FIPRESCI, India, Ashok Rane, Festival Director, Aurangabad International Film Festival 2020, Suneel Puranik, Chairman, Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy and Vidyashankar, Artistic Director, BIFFES 2020.
