My dear mother
I am seventy now and you left me when I was only fourteen
But I remember every moment you spent with me during your short journey as my mother
I remember my father saying that I was born a very dark complexioned baby who didn't cry for several days after I was born
You bought the most expensive imported soaps to try and give me a better complexion ,but I still don't know if you succeeded
I remember how you gave me a bath every day after giving me a very good oil massage
I remember how you taught me how to brush my teeth
I remember ,how you had taken all the pain to prepare my tiffin on the first day in school ,I even remember the taste of the rawa pudding you had made for my dabba

I remember how you stood in a long queue of parents all night to see that I got admission in a better school
I remember all the trouble you took to bring me up as a god -fearing child who followed all the rituals of your religion
You made sure that I had the best clothes for school and for festive occasion
I still have the aroma of all the rich food you prepared for me every day
And if there is one thing I will always remember is how you taught me how to respect women and what a way I have been respecting them !
I don't believe in heaven or reincarnation but if someone promises to show me your face again
I am willing to believe in anything now or in the time to come
Happy hundredth birthday dear mother and how I wish you were here to celebrate your birthday the way I have always wanted to celebrate it
