The Queen's Lawhive Keeps Growing And Flourishing...

Ali Peter John

At the beginning of every year, I try my best to meet someone who would make the year going by memorable for me and strengthen my faith in seeing a better future in the year to come. For the last two days, I have been trying to find that someone special till I woke up this morning and suddenly zeroed down on a woman who I had learnt to respect after just three meetings with her, the first in a cafe when I couldn't make enough sense of how important and even how intelligent she was, I had only taken her as just another rich or maybe middle class woman who had very little to say about herself or the world. The second time I met her, I had to see the huge door of her office with her name and the name of her company in golden letters. I stepped back and wondered if I was entering the right office of the right woman. She was Saveena Beda Sachar, the powerful lawyer behind the diminutive personality with a soft and sweet voice which I who had spent long hours, days, weeks and even months with some of the most coarse and hardened lawyers in every kind of court could not associate with, but what she talked during our long conversation in her hive more than just made sense. I was so influenced with her office and her way of working that I even grabbed her kind offer to work from her office, but unfortunately my health problems did not let me have the comfort, the likes of which I don't have the opportunity or the pleasure of seeing these days, but I hope to put my health in shape if not for anything then at least to avail of her kind offer to work from her office.

Our friendship however grew stronger....

I was meeting her after quite some time. She had fought many more battles in courts.  She had taken part in many more panel discussions and had grown several notches as a lawyer, the proof of which was the spectacles she was wearing and making the spectacles look desperate because they couldn't make any difference to her God-blessed face. She was immersed in small cases and big, the latest being her representing the thousands of workers of the Jetlite Airways, which she was determined to work hard on and is confident she will win, the motto with which she fights all her cases....

Saveena Bedi Sachar is a law graduate from Pune who reached high places at a very young age. She was associated with the World Intellectual Property Organisation, Switzerland and was the youngest writer to co-author a book on the intellectual property rights published by Butterworths.

She was soon recognised as a legal expert in the fields of the media and entertainment and handled issues like literature, art, films, television, music, marketing, advertising and other associated fields. Her work was further recognised and she was appointed head of leading companies like Walt Disney, UTV, NX, INX and other leading companies where she could show her prowess and in the process had grown into an institution by herself....

..3 She had gained enough confidence to start her own legal Chambers (Lawhive) and one woman's decision led to the forming of Saveena Bedi Sachar’s Lawhive Associates in 2012. Ever since that time, her company has been fighting for and against cases from the smallest courts to the Supreme Court, from Tribunals, from the Competition Boards to the company boards. Give her and her Hive a good fight and she is ever willing to take it up together with her young team who know the fire in their Ma'am can never slow down or tamed because of her never say die attitude towards life..

And all the work that Ms Bedi has put in has not gone unrecognised. She has been awarded on countless occasions and felicitated for her efforts to excel in law. She has been recognised as the hundred most powerful women in the legal field in the world, she has been recognised for her efforts to give new directions and new dimensions to some old laws and she is respected by one and all where the dignity of the law is recognised.

She has been playing a very vital role in solving the various problems of the various associations of the film industry and has been campaigning the cause of every section of the industry. Her last landmark contribution was in the case of the film “Mulk". Her being a part of the film has made her a very difference and a very strong impact on the film, a fact accepted by all those associated with the film which was a very important release of 2019.

In the midst of all these legal wrangles, Ms Bedi never neglects her duty as a mother of a six year old daughter, called Simran and her businessman husband. In fact, even as we were having lunch for the last time in 2019 and she was fighting out a case in her mind, she was very busy planning Simran's birthday which was only a few days before her own birthday....

Everyone from Modi to Maniben and from Smriti Irani and Arundhati Roy are only talking about the ideal Indian woman of tomorrow. I saw her, met her, talked to her, had lunch with her and shook hands with her and genuinely wished her a Happy New Year and all the way to ‘Chaayos', my working place, I wished how we could have many more Indian women like Saveena Bedi Sachar.

Two days later, it was, Ms Bedi’s birthday and I was taken aback by how my feelings for her and her own feelings on her birthday matched.  I told her I would not be naïve and wish her a thousand years and before I could complete my sentence, Ms Bedi said, “I only want to live a healthy and long enough life to see my daughter, Simran established and settled down to a good and meaning life in these troubled times when it is so very difficult to predict what the future will hold for you, me and anyone”.  That one sentence again raised  Ms Bedi in my esteem.
