There are some roles that connect with artists on a deeper level, some characters that the talent can relate and identify with. Actor John Magaro found one such fit when he came on board Celine Song’s directorial debut ‘Past Lives’. The emotional romantic drama tells the story of Nora and Hae Sung, two childhood sweethearts who come face to face after a gap of twenty years. Long-lost feelings and forgotten memories begin to crop up as the two take a look at the past they left behind.
John Magaro plays Arthur
John plays Arthur, Nora’s novelist husband in the film. What drew Magaro to this role was how real, vulnerable, kind and human he was as a partner. Talking about his character, John said, “There aren't any villains. But there are people who are filled with pride and people who are jealous and envious and angry, but they have to fight through those emotions”. Elaborating on how his director imagined the part, he added, “What Celine does is portray two really good men—they're really kind, generous men—who are able to put their childish jealousies and insecurities behind them because they care about this woman”.While typically portrayed in most movies as the third wheel in a love triangle, John’s character has been created in a fresh, unique and real manner. The ‘Unbroken’, ‘The Umbrella Academy’ and ‘The Big Short’ star seems to have connected with this aspect the most. ‘Past Lives’ has already been rated as the “Best Film Of The Year” by renowned critics & global audiences. It’s also being called the strongest contender for “Oscar 2024” and a love story for all time.
