In an industry with most shows showcasing the Saas Bahu Drama, there are very few stories that talk about how intense and independent women can be. One such story is of Jyoti that was made about 11 years ago. It was so powerful and dealt with everyday problems of a family so beautifully that it is relevant even today and is extremely loved by the people even in its current re-run on Dangal TV.

Playing the role of Jyoti, its strong character and relevance even today, Sneha Wagh shares,“Initially I never thought of the show in a very different way. I signed it because of the opportunity but as the show went on I realized how important it is to portray women in powerful characters and share actual everyday stories rather than only showing rich families who are always decked with good clothes and heavy jewellery. There is a need to air shows where women are powerful.

We have a patriarchal society and will continue to be so unless we change our mindset” She adds, “After doing Jyoti, I consciously did roles that played a very important role in the story rather than just another character. Even when I was offered to play roles of mothers, I made sure that the character had a very big impact on the protagonist’s life. I think this was my way of telling women that even they are strong and that was my way of giving back to the society”

When asked in an interview, what inspired him to write a story so deep while making sure it was relatable and real, Purnendu Shekhar the writer of the Jyoti said, “Jyoti is inspired by a person who was very close to me. She used to tie rakhi to me. So she was just like my sister. When the makers asked me to write a story, her story was waiting to be told. And it was easier to keep the story real as the twists and turns did take place in her life. Most scenes and also the dialogues have actually taken place.”We hope to see more strong inspiring women centric stories on television. Jyoti is currently airing on Dangal TV at 10am & 9pm.
