Trailer Talk— Daddy

After bringing to life some memorable baddies on screen in films like Rajneeti, Om Shanti Om and Ra.One, the 44-year-old Arjun Rampal seems to have finally found his most interesting character till date. Based on the life and times of the gangster turned politician Arun Gulab Gawli, the theatrical trailer of Daddy stuns, shocks and leaves you wanting for more. We are mighty excited for this one.

Set in the 1970’s when Mumbai was still Bombay, Daddy is the incredible story of a milkman from Mumbai’s Daagdi Chawl, Arun Gawli, who fell into the traps of the underworld after the lockdown on textile mills in the 70’s. The film traces Gawli’s journey from being a small time crook to being a part of the infamous BRA gang. Eventually, Gawli ended up working with the most dreaded names in Underworld before becoming a politician. This film also traces the rising as a cult among the people of Daagdi Chawl who lovingly called him Daddy.

Ever since the inception of the film, Rampal has been working passionately on the project, going to the extent of even co-writing and producing the film. Apart from that, the actor has constantly been in touch with Gawli’s family to get into the skin of the character. And all the hard work seems to be paying off!

Not only does the actor have an uncanny resemblance to Gawli, but he seems to have emulated Gawli’s character to the T. Everything from the mannerisms, accent and most importantly, the attitude is on point.

Speaking of resemblance, a big shout out to the casting team! In the past we have seen how actors playing real-life characters in biopics don’t have the slightest of resemblance to their off-screen avatars (read, Mary Kom, Azhar being the recent ones). Daddy scores really well on that ground, at least with their lead. Another casting call which have us jumping up and down in excitement is Farhan Akhtar who will be seen in an extended cameo playing Dawood Ibrahim. JUST. CAN’T. WAIT.! The film also marks the Bollywood debut of actress Aishwarya Rajesh who has appeared in several Tamil and Malayalam films. ‘Daddy’ also marks the return of director Ashim Ahluwalia to mainstream Bollywood after breaking on to the scene with the 2012 critically-acclaimed film ‘Miss Lovely’. Ahluwalia seems to be on the top of his game with this one – we just love the dark undertones, slick editing and the haunting use of music in the trailer!

With a release date of 21 July 2017, ‘Daddy’ will face stiff competition at the box office from the much-awaited ‘Jagga Jasoos’ which hits the theatres on 14 July and Tiger Shroff’s ‘Munna Michael’ which releases on the same day as ‘Daddy’. So the film’s fate will not only depend on how ‘Munna Michael’ opens but also on Jagga’s first week run. Though the three-way clash could mean lesser screens for ‘Daddy’, but we’re quite sure the film will find it’s own audience.

Are you as excited as us to find out what will happen when these titans clash at the box-office? Hold your horses and check out the theatrical trailer of ‘Daddy’ below as we wait for this juicy box-office encounter!

Produced by Kundalini Entertainment and Karta Entertainment, ‘Daddy’ hits the screens on 21 July 2017.
