Breaking away from the saas-bahu trope seen on television, COLORS’ ‘Mangal Lakshmi’ is winning hearts with an emotionally loaded tale of sisters who want to secure respect for each other in their relationships. While Mangal is on a quest to find her younger sister Lakshmi a respectful spouse, Lakshmi encourages her sister to stand up against her husband, who humiliates her often. In the current storyline, a viral video of Lakshmi and Kartik has distressing repercussions on the two sisters, but Kusum (Mangal’s mother-in-law) convinces everyone that it is a blessing in disguise. In a refreshing departure from the stereotype of overbearing mothers-in-law, this show offers a refreshing narrative on family dynamics, challenging societal norms. Amidst relatable female leads, the character of Kusum Saxena, portrayed by Urvashi Upadhyay, stands out as a pillar of strength and support. Urvashi's portrayal of Kusum brings to life the endearing relationship between Mangal and her mother-in-law, capturing their joint efforts in navigating life's hurdles. While the bond shared by Mangal and Kusum has piqued viewers’ curiosity, actor Urvashi talks about the audiences embracing the show’s novelty.
Mangal Lakshmi: Urvashi Upadhyay's Perspective
Talking about her role in ‘Mangal Lakshmi’ Urvashi Upadhyay says, “I was drawn to the script because it offered a fresh perspective on familial relationships. As an artist, it is very fulfilling to be part of a show that defies conventions by putting an entirely new spin on family drama. Many women have husbands like Adit, but only a small percentage, have a mother-in-law like Kusum. So I’m grateful for all the love that I have received for portraying the role of a supportive mother-in-law for the first time. I’ve observed that mothers-in-law are usually shown as nosy and vicious, I view my role as an opportunity to highlight their often ignored good qualities. I aspire to bring the change in the society through my character. That’s what makes this show centered around women, who have different strengths so special.”
