Heartening Tale

Living in a gorgeous remote village in Assam, Dhunu (Bhanita Das) a young girl loves to do all that a young little girl likes to, whether it is climbing the trees, going fishing with the boys or flaunting her thermocol guitar when she isn’t helping her widowed mother (Basanti Das) with her daily chores. She wishes to own a real guitar someday, but can people with no means at all and also limited means dare to dream?

It is the first Assamese narrative feature in three decades to win the National Award for best film. It is also the first contender from Assam to represent India at the Academy Awards this year. To its credit, written, directed, produced, edited and shot (on a Canon 5D) by Das, the visually beautiful film represents ‘cottage industry’ cinema of the finest timbre.

Bhanita Das in the role of Dhunu is extremely natural and effortlessly she strips away any vestiges of fiction that might appear to be driving the arc of the character that she sets out to play. Basanti Das, as her mother, blends in imperceptibly to capture a unique, tangible universe that effortlessly draws the audience into a warm embrace.

In short, the film Village Rockstars is a tribute to the place that Das belongs to and also nothing but a veritable celebration of the indomitability of its people, manifested in the ability of Dhunu (Bhanita Das) and her mother (Basanti Das) to dare to attempt the impossible. It’s a heartening tale of courage and resilience in times of adversity and our pursuit of happiness, which may not be able to attract the audiences to the theatres though.
