Though it has managedto collect a measly 1 cr at the box office on the ope ning day on a budget of 30 cr, Abhishek Chaubey’s latest film, Sonchiriya has greatly impressed filmmaker Vishal Bharadwaj. Abhishek’s association with Vishal goes long back as he has assisted the latter in multiple films such as Omkara and Maqbool. Sonchiriya hit screens this Friday, and Vishal can’t stop praising the director, who was his former assistant. “To make Omkara as a western film, like a western-genre film, was Abhishek's idea and 12 years later, he has taken Omkara to some other level in his Sonchiriya. I think it’s a very mature film and the performances are nuanced,” says Vishal. He adds, “As a director, he has grown by many folds since Ishiqiya. His command over his craft is now very matured. Like for instance, in the major scene (in the film) where the shootout happens and the kids die, he didn't shoot the shot of the kids and that shows the confidence of the director. It’s not that the shot was edited out later, it was not even shot because he was very sure that he doesn't want to show the massacre of kids,” he says. Abhishek is known for his films Ishqiya, Dedh Ishqiya and Udta Punjab.
