NOT SO FUNNY OR SCARY!

Jyothi Venkatesh

The horror-comedy genre is the least explored in Marathi cinema, with Mahesh Kothare's Zapatlela series and Pachhedlela (2004), being the only two known exceptions. To make up for this, now we have a new horror-comedy 5 episodes web-series, titled Bhootatlela, which is now streaming on MX Player. It is yet another love triangle with a difference designed to tickle your funny bone

Directed by Shivaji Lotan Patil, the plot reveals the simpleton Rayba (Priyadarshan Jadhav), who is engaged to get married to the beautiful Shivani, (Surabhi Hande). But matters take an unexpected turn on the night of the haldi ceremony, held a day before the wedding, when a beautiful ghost, Sudha (Sayli Patil) starts haunting him. Though she makes an appearance again in the midst of the wedding festivities, Rayba is the only one who can see her.

On his Haldi day, Rayba forgets to take the Katyar given by his mother to keep the evil spirits away and suddenly he feels that someone is following him. The web series opens with Rayba riding a bike with his friend riding pillion. The friend excuses himself and gets down to attend to nature’s call but Rayba feels two hands are still on his shoulders and asks his friend to get down fast. Not only Rayba, but the viewer too is shell shocked to find that it’s not his friend’s but two severed hands of a ghost clutching his shoulders him lovingly.

The biggest problem about this spooky series is that there is nothing haunting about it and it is not at all eerie and there is absolutely no element of novelty about the plot written by Yogesh Shirsat who has also played a not-so-vital role in the serial like producer Bhupendra Kumar Nandan, who plays one of the friends of Rayba. It is a good way to cut on the expenses on the star cast. However, Priyadarshan Jadhav rises above his half baked role with effortless ease while Surabhi Hande is just about average if you forget her obesity. Sayli Patil impresses with her cute role of the Tamilian ghost. Pradeep Patwardhan is just about passable. Producer cum actor Bhupendar Nandan Nandan registers his presence.

Direction by Shivaji Lotan Patil who is an award winning director with issue based Marathi films is not up to the mark as he fails to capitalize on the extra ordinary situations the presence of a ghost could have created as he is let down by the insipid screenplay which shows a lot of promise and even startles you when the plot begins with a pair of female hands on the shoulders of Rayba but fails to capitalize on the horror aspect, thanks to not-so-click editing. The web series which lacks drama is not so funny or scary and also fails to live up to its cheeky title
