Meena Kumari Land Dispute: Court Orders Pali Hill Society to Vacate Property

A Mumbai court has ruled in favor of the late actress Meena Kumari and her husband Kamal Amrohi, ordering a housing society to vacate land leased from the couple in 1966

The appellate bench of the Small Causes Court in Bandra directed the 162-member Cozyhome Co-operative Housing Society to return the property in Pali Hill to Tajdar Amrohi, Kamal Amrohi's son, within six months

The court found that the society had failed to pay the contracted rent regularly, violating the lease terms, which led to the eviction order

Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi purchased the land in 1959, and it was leased to the society in 1966 for building construction at a rent of ₹8,835 per month

Kamal Amrohi terminated the lease in 1990, claiming non-payment of rent, and initiated legal action to reclaim the land

The eviction order was initially passed in 2007 by the Small Causes Court, but the society challenged it, leading to the recent appellate bench's confirmation of the eviction

Meena Kumari, known for her poignant roles in Indian cinema, was also a poetess and playback singer, earning the title "Tragedy Queen"

She was a prominent figure in the film industry from 1939 to 1972, leaving a lasting legacy before her death on March 31, 1972
