Shaji N. Karun Death: National Award-Winning Malayalam Filmmaker Passes Away

Renowned Malayalam filmmaker and cinematographer Shaji N Karun has passed away at the age of 73. He died at his home 'Piravi' in Thiruvananthapuram after battling cancer.

Shaji N Karun was an influential figure in the Malayalam film industry, known for his artistic contributions through films like "Piravi," "Swapnam," "Swam," "Vanaprastham," and "Nishad."

His directorial debut, "Piravi," won the Golden Camera Special Mention at the Cannes Film Festival, making it the Malayalam film with the most international awards

"Swam" was notable as the first Malayalam film to be screened in the main competition section at Cannes, highlighting Karun's impact on global cinema

Throughout his career, Karun received numerous accolades, including state and national awards for best cinematography, and was honored with the Padma Shri in 2011

He served as the chairman of the Kerala State Film Academy and the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), showcasing his leadership in the film community

Shaji N Karun was also recognized with the J.C. Daniel Award for his lifetime contributions to the Malayalam film industry.

As a cinematographer, he worked on several acclaimed films by Aravindan, winning both National and State Awards for Best Cinematography

Up until his passing, he was serving as the Chairman of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC), continuing his influence in the industry
