Urmila Matondkar, Shilpa Shinde , Manoj Tiwari, Ravi Kishen, Dineshlal Nirahuwa. Hema Malini, Sunny Deol, Moon Moom Sen, Shatrughan Sinha etc are contesting in the elections. TV actors tell JYOTHI VENKATESH that while celebs have a great pull during elections, it is also an added responsibility.

I don't think Indian public is that ignorant of the fact that it's okay to vote for your favourite actor or actresses. Being a fan is different and voting for the best party is a big responsibility which should be done taking a lot of points into consideration. Whoever thinks that they can fool their fans by getting their votes in elections are wrong in my view. People of India are smart enough to understand every gimmick played by these so-called actors turned politicians.
I've never been offered to join any party. And if in future I join politics, I'll make sure people don't vote for me for my popularity but for the services and work that I'll do for the public.

I have no interest in joining politics at all but yes, some people like it, so they do join. And as we actors are public figure, we do have people who know us and like us so yes because of that fans do follow their favourite actor turned politician and sometimes they might even vote for them. I have been offered twice, once when I was doing Balika Vadhu and even now when in Roop.

When celebrities join political parties, it definitely helps that particular party to get more votes because mostly, people don’t know who is the candidate, what he or she has done in past, how will he or she be, etc. But as people have seen celebrities and have been their fans, so without thinking about what they might do in politics people vote for them. The reason behind it is that they at least have seen their faces and their work as an actor. Otherwise, people have no idea about candidates. They only know whether he or she is from which party, other than that they have no information about anything. So, most of the times what happens is that people don't vote for the candidate, they just vote for the party. But when celebrities get involved, people don't think about the party, they think about their favourite actor. So basically, it’s a good strategy for that particular party. I have not been offered to join a political party yet but there are people who call me and ask me to come and support their parties, give speeches etc. But I don't do it. Yes, I have an interest in politics and I think I will be entering politics after a while but right now I am just concentrating on my work. I love my work so I don't want to do ten things at a time. When I will feel that this is the right time to get into politics, I will try for it.

Yes I think it does attract people. I was offered to join politics when I was doing Uttaran but I was pretty young at that time hence I said no.

It was basically started by Mr Bachchan, then came Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Hema Malini, Jaya Prada now there are Urmila Matondkar and Shilpa Shinde. According to me, at the time when it had started, when Mr Bachchan got involved in politics, it was something different. He gotelected with a good amount of votes. Other than him, most of the actors got elected and it was obvious because they had their fan following. I feel this won’t work in today's time because today's voters are really smart and they don't take actors seriously, to be honest. Their fan following will work a bit but it won't work as it used to do years ago. I have not been approached to join any political party. We are definitely getting offers to be a part of campaigns but I don't really want to get into it.

Absolutely it does affect the judgement of people. As public figures, there is a huge responsibility on the shoulders of the actors to make their decision wisely and choose their party. Pan India we have seen stars like Chiranjeevi, Pawan Kalyan, Hema Malini, Smriti Irani and recently Urmila Matondkar, Shilpa Shinde who have either made their own parties or joined existing parties and contested elections. People look up to these stars as their idols and yes it definitely affects the judgement of the common man.

People don't understand the difference between a politician and an artist. These two things are totally different from each other and I stay away from it. I feel that if I remain an actor, it will be good for me. The second thing is that I don't feel that I am that popular that people will approach me for politics. I never go for campaigning or anything for any political party. It is a good thing for the actors who are been approached and called. The thing here is that people here benefit by earning it well and if political parties think that by spending money on actors they will get more votes so I feel that it’s definitely not right as people are smart enough. They think before voting. Literally, people are coming from abroad just to vote, so using such tricks to get votes won't work anymore. People won't be convinced they will only vote for the party which they like.
