By 1947 , many Hindi filmmakers had realized the potential of using films to spread the messages of the pride of India through films which they felt was the strongest medium to wake up the people and let them know about the heritage , the history , the culture and the changing faces of India - Ali Peter John
They told stories about important wars fought even before the fight for freedom and even after India had attained independence.
They told stories about brave men and women who took part in the freedom movement. They told stories of small and big wars that were fought at different times .
They told stories about women who gave up their lives for freedom . They told stories about how some leaders fought for freedom from the torture and humiliation they faced under imperialist rulers who refused to leave the soil of India .
And they even used important sports events to focus on the unity of lndia . There are attempts still being made to make films which will glorify lndia and lndian leaders through sports events like Hockey and even Cricket.
Filmmakers are still looking for stories that can had to the glory of lndia , also called Bharat and Hindustan.
Till then , lets take a look at some of the significant films made on lndia and its multifaceted nature ...
MOTHER INDIA - Mehboob Khan's magnum opus, told the story of a newly independent India as they struggled to cope with two square meals a day as farmers.
Nargis played the title role as a mother with two sons , one good and other wild . The good son was played by a new actor called Rajendra Kumar and the bad son by another new actor , Sunil Dutt .
The film created a huge sensation and it was Nargis's last film before she married her wild son (Sunil Dutt) . The film had a running time of three and half hours .
The lndian audience lapped up the film , but when the film was marked as an entry in the foreign film section , it was rejected because it had too many songs .
It was a trend setter and there are filmmakers today who want to make their own versions of it , but a great original will be an original. The story of "Mother India" cannot be told in today's times .
NAYA DAUR - The film is directed by the pioneering filmmaker , Dr B R Chopra . Just like Mother India , this Dilip Kumar-starrer was also based on agrarian India, where a 'tonga' took on the motorbike in a race, which would determine the livelihood of many farmers in a newly-independent India.
The brilliant performances of Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala and the lyrics of Shair Ludhianvi with the music of O P Nayyar made the film for all generations, not just for the naya daur.
PURAB AUR PASCHIM- Manoj Kumar who had shot to fame with his very first directorial venture , 'Upkaar ' made his second film which focused on young lndians following the attraction of the west and how one man with his love and dedication to his country , brings about a change in the lndians who have made their homes and depend on their existence in whatever is offered to them by the whites who still carry a very diferent image of slaves of the British raaj.
This film too had some great music which helped in sending the message home . It was the biggest hits of its time .
SAAT HINDUSTANI- The film based on the Goa liberation and describes the stoy of seven young Indians who help in liberating Goa , and unknown actor called Amitabh Bachchan made a beginning with the film and went on to be one of the biggest stars ever of lndian cinema .
HAQEEQAT - One of the finest war films in India, it had a cast including Jayant , Balraj Sahni, a newcomer Dharmendra and Sanjay Khan along with Vijay Anand.
The film based on the Indo-Chaina war in 1962, was directed by Chetan Anand who later directed other war films and some entertaining films too.
THE LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH- The story of Bhagat Singh was first told in " Shaheed " which was actually directed by the actor Manoj Kumar and had Manoj himself in the role of Bhagat Singh which was a benchmark for all future actors who aspired to play the brave freedom fighter who sacrificed his life for the country
RANG DE BASANTI - This was almost a imaginary version of telling the story of Bhagat Singh.
The film's narrative is rooted in current day Delhi Uĺniversity and explored parallels between how things would change if today's youth were as driven as those in pre-independent India. Aamir Khan his young co-stars excelled in their performances .
CHAK DE INDIA - It was perhaps the first feature film based on the game of Hockey. The realistic direction of Shimit Aamin and the brilliant performance of Shah Rukh Khan and the girls playing for India made it a memorable film because it was not just a sports film , but had several values of India associated with it .
The film was first released ten years ago , but is still fresh in the mind. When the Indian Women's Olympic Team Missed winning the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics , memories of the finals played under the guidance of Kabir Khan , the once humiliated coach came back to mind in a flood .
LAGAAN - Ashutosh Gowariker directed the film and carefully charted the journey of a few Indian farmers taking on officers of the British Army in a cricket match to save their fields .
The success of the lndian team in pre-partition India inspired players who played in today's times and hopefully will inspire all players to come
SWADESH - Gowariker's ambitious film followed a well-settled Indian working for NASA, rediscovering his roots during a short vacation to find his childhood nanny and falling in love with the motherland all over...
Prahaar- One of the most perfectly made movies on the Indian army, it tells the story of a jawaan who even as he adjusts to life as a civilian cannot abandon his sense of morality and discipline that he had imbibed when he was in the army. Nana Patekar was at his very best as a no-nonsense commando .
BHAG MILKHA BHAG - Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's biopic based on one of India's most famous athlete Milkha Singh , who died at 92 of Covid a month ago , evoked plenty of patriotism, as one man ran to put India on the world map of athletics.
ROJA - The film was an eye opener on the problems of terrorism. The direction of Mani Ratnam and the music of A R Rahman who was scoring music for a Hindi film for the first time and the performance of Madhoo made the film a memorable experience.
AUR BHI AISI FILME HOGI , LEKIN SHAAYAD UNME WOH JAAN NAHI HOGI JO INN FILMON MEIN THI . HUM KYAA AISI FILME BANAANE KO BHUL GAYE HAI ? YAAD KARO , NAHI TOH AANEWALA WAQT AAPKO BHULAA DEGAA
