YASH CHOPRA KO EK HI NASHA THA , DILIP KUMAR KA NASHA

He was an inspiration for all times . He was an institution which can never be forgotten easily. But for Yash Chopra , he was an endless intoxication ( kabhi na khatam hone wala nasha) -Ali Peter John

Yash Chopra was a student in Jallandhar. His father wanted him to be an ICS officer and was strictly against him following his elder brother, Baldev Raj who had taken to editing a flim magazine and making flims .

Yash however was a crazy fan of the poet Sahir Ludhianvi, which led him to see flims and most of the flims he saw happened to be the flims of Dilip Kumar as the leading man , flims like "Deedaar " , " Mela " , "Daag " and "Madhumati ".

Circumstances and time led Yash in different directions of life and he finally landed in Bombay from where he was to fly to london to pursue his course to appear for his ICS exams.

But , the very idea of being closed to his idols like Sahir and Dilip Kumar made him lose all interest in going to London to appear for his ICS exams.

He pleaded with his elder brother to take him on as an assistant director. His brother put him on to a friend, I.S Johar wirh whom Yash worked for hardly a month and came back to his brother and begged of him to let him join him as his assistant and his brother saw the passion in his brother and asked him to join B. R Flims and the first flim Yash assisted his brother on was " Naya Daur " which had Dilip Kumar and Vyjaynthimala in the key roles .

It was during the shooting of "Naya Daur " on locations in Poona that Yash got his chance to not only make friends with Dilip Kumar but also was able to see how Dilip Kumar worked .

Dilip Kumar and Yash got the brainwave to have cricket grounds, volleyball and football grounds prepared for the unit to play on during the evenings when the shoot for the day was over .

It was after the games that Dilip Kumar took Yash to his room and taught him how to prepare the best "Kababs," "Biryani" and his favorite dish "Baidaa Kheema".

The great actor told the young Yash that it was very important to eat well if one had to do good work .

It was during the shooting of "Naya Daur" that Yash saw how the actor worked with so much passion even for the most minor scenes .

It was while Yash was working as an assistant during the making of "Naya Daur" that Yash made up his mind to make a flim with Dilip Kumar as the lead actor.

Yash directed flims like "Dhool ka Phool", "Dharamputra" and 'Waqt' for B.R Flims . And when he branched out on his own and launched Yash Raj Flims that he made his own first flim "Daag " with Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore and Raakhee.

He established Yash Raj Fiims with Kabhi Kabhi and Deewaar and made other big flims , but he had not forgotten his dream of making a flim with his Idol, Dilip Kumar.

He found his opportunity when the writer Javed Akhtar gave him a script about a fearless newspaper editor who fights against a liquor mafia .

Yash could see no one but Dilip Kumar as the actor to play the role of the editor. And he was relieved when his Idol agreed to play the role.

More than half his battle was won when the actor read the script and loved the whole concept of the flim .

The other good points he liked about the flim were his teaming up with Waheeda Rehman who had done several flims with him as his leading lady and even the other actors like Amrish Puri , Saeed Jaffrey, and Anil Kapoor in whom he always had seen great promise.

The shooting of the flim was a great experience for Yash and Dilip Kumar, but the flim didn't do well and Yash went on to make other flims , mostly with his new favorite actor Shah Rukh Khan .

But whatever he did and whatever flim he made , he always had one big ambition and that was to make another and better flim with Dilip Kumar.

He was talking to me in his office at Vikas Park one morning when he started talking about the magic of Dilip Kumar and ended his talk saying, " Sahab ke saath agar maine ek aur flim nahi banayi , toh main apne aap ko kabhi maaf nahi kar sakunga.

Kabhi kabhi sochta hu ki agar mere jaahan mein sahab nahi hote toh yeh zindagi bematlab ki hoti ."

However, Yash made other flims till he made his last film "JAB TAK HAI JAAN " . And i still can't imagine how a master flimmaker could be knocked out of his life by just one mosquito .

MAIN WAISE TOH JANNAT MEIN NAHI MANTA , LEKIN AAJKAL MAANNE KO BAHUT DIL KARTA HAI , KYUNKI AB JITNE BHI MERE GURU LOG THE WOH SAB KAHI DOOR CHALE GAYE HAI.

AB LOG KEHTE HAI KI WOH SAB JANNAT CHALE GAYE HAI. AAJ RAAT JANNAT MEIN EK MEETING HO RAHI HOGI JISME EK FILM KI PLANNING HO RAHI HOGI JISME YASH CHOPRA DIGDRASHAK HONGE AUR DILIP SAHAB , DEV SAHAB AUR RAJ KAPOOR SAHAB HEROES HONGE AUR NARGIS , NUTAN AUR MADHUBALA HEROINES HONGE.
