I first met the music director O P Nayyar as a homeopathy specialist in his clinic near Churchgate station - Ali Peter John
His best days were behind him . His lucky mascot Asha Bhonsle had ditched him for his rival R D Burman and he was trying his best to promote a new singer called Pushpa Pagdhare as his alternative to Asha Bhonsle, but he couldn't do much for her as his own career was on the downslide .
All the filmmakers who said that they couldn't work without Nayyar Sahab had suddenly stopped working with him and the singers who he gave some of the best songs were behaving like victims of amnesia .
Nayyar was more angry and even desperate when his best friend who he had resurrected , Asha Bhonsle refused to acknowledge his contribution to her career and the worst insult she did to him was when she launched her chain of hotels in different parts of the world and called "Asha's " and had huge photographs of all the music directors and singers as the wall decorations of the hotels , but dint have a single photograph of Nayyar anywhere.
They had broken up , but this kind of neglect broke the heart of Nayyar and he was not the same king of Hindi film music again.
At once stage the composer who had no time for even the most prestigious films and filmmakers was now without any work, while lesser and younger composers had taken over the field of Hindi film music and he was forced to make homeopathy which was like his hobby become his only way of life.
To add insult to injury , his family also distanced itself from him ,leaving him in a very sad state both financially and psychologically...
It was at this stage that an organisation which kept vintage music alive in an era of shor sharaba arranged a special show where all the songs sung by amateur singers were from the treasury of Nayyar's magical and melodious music and songs . It was an event that brought back the light into the dark, desolate and despairing times in Nayyar's life.
It was a jam - packed audience at the Shanmukhananda Auditorium in Mumbai and the Shiv Sena supremo , also known as the "hindu hriday samrat" was the chief guest.
It was painful to see Nayyar who was a scene stealer himself looking at the "Samraat" like a fan who could give his life for the "Samrat" .
It was the turn of the "Samrat" to speak and being a master of an orator , the "Samrat " spoke only about Nayyar and his music for more than 45 minutes and Nayyar couldn't control his tears of joy and the audience gave Nayyar the kind of standing applause he must have not received at any other time ...
And when it was tine for Nayyer to speak, he was choked with emotions and said just one line in which he said , " Aj raat main agar mar bhi jaaoon toh koyi baat nahi. Aaj meraa sangeet amar ho gaya kiuki Balasaheb ne mere sangeet ki taarif ki hain . "
He was facing the worst time of his life and was finally given shelter in a chawl in Virar by a lower middle class Maharastrian family.
He kept falling sick and died of a massive heart attack in a small room that was supposed to be his bedroom .
And not even his greatest admirers and fans attempted his funeral . And those who attended kept waiting to see if Asha Bhonsle would come , but some human beings turn into patthar dils and nothing matters to them more than fame and fortune .
Today , Asha Bhonsle lives with her son in one of the most expensive apartments in Mumbai and I wonder if she has the time or the inclination to remember that it was a man called Om Prakash Nayyar who had held her hand when she needed support the most and someone who recently saw "Asha's" in London told me that other composers have found places on the walls , but not O P Nayyar
SUNA THAA MOHABBAT KO LOG GUNAH SAMAJHTE HAIN . LEKIN NAYYAR SAHAB KI PYAAR KI KAHAANI KAA AAGHAAZ AUR ANJAAM KI KAHAANI SUN KAR YEAKEEN SAA HOTAA HAIN KI HAA MOHABBAT KARNAA KABHI KABHI BAHAT SANGEEN BAAT HOTI HAI
