A Voice that Stirred the Nation: Kavi Pradeep's Birth Anniversary

The name of poet Pradeep may not strike your mind immediately, but right now let me tell you that in the voice of Kokila Lata Mangeshkar, 'aye mere watan ke logon, zara aankh mein bhar lo pani, jo shaeed hue unki zara yaad karo kurbani Just remember, if you have heard a heart-stirring patriotic song like 'Qurbani', your answer will be 'yes'.

Poet Pradeep was adamant that if anyone would sing this song, it would be Lata Mangeshkar.

This eye-watering and heart-wrenching song was written by poet Pradeep himself. After fighting with China in the 1962 war, we were defeated and many soldiers were lost; Poet Pradeep had written this song to pay tribute to the same soldiers and the responsibility of singing this song was to be given to Asha Bhosle, but the composer of this song C Ramchandra did not know what he said and poet Pradeep did not know what he understood that he was adamant. This song will be recorded only by Lata Mangeshkar. When the matter reached Lata Mangeshkar, she could not say yes, after all, how she could sing her sister Asha Bhosle's song, poet Pradeep was shocked and said, listen to this song once and then decide. When Lata Ji heard this song, her eyes became moist. She agreed to the recording but she also put a condition that poet Pradeep would also be present there at the time of rehearsal of this song.

On Republic Day in 1963, Lata Mangeshkar sang it in front of the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and when the song ended, everyone's eyes including Nehru ji were moist. But this is not the only song with which poet Pradeep is identified. In Ashok Kumar's film 'Mashal' released in 1950, there was a song by poet Pradeep which was a huge hit.

Manna Dey sang this song and Sachin Dev Burman was its composer. The lyrics of this song are also very meaningful. The lyrics of this song were “upar gagan vishaal, neeche gahara paataal beech mein dharatee, vaah mere maalik tune kiya kamaal”

Poet Pradeep also loved writing for children. He not only wrote the song  "aao bachchon tumhein dikhaen jhaankee Hindustan kee" but also sang it.
