Anupam Kher was born into a Kashmiri Pandit family. His father, Pushkarnath Kher, was a clerk, and his mother, Dulari Kher, was a homemaker. Anupam Kher's childhood was marked by financial hardship and struggle. He completed his education at St. Bede's College in Shimla and then earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Government College, Chandigarh. However, his heart was set on acting and he wanted to pursue a career in it.

Anupam Kher began his acting career in theater. He moved from Shimla to Delhi to enroll at the National School of Drama (NSD), Delhi.
