Veteran Bollywood actor Arshad Warsi, who shot to fame with his iconic role as Circuit in the cult comedy Munna Bhai MBBS (2003), has recently revealed an interesting backstory about how the beloved character got its name. As the actor celebrates his 53rd birthday, fans are reminiscing about his legendary comic timing and unforgettable on-screen moments.
From 'Khujli' to 'Circuit' – The Untold Story
While Arshad Warsi made his Bollywood debut in Tere Mere Sapne (1996), it was the role of Circuit that made him a household name. In a recent interview, Warsi disclosed that the character was originally named Khujli, not Circuit.
“The original name of my character was Khujli. The clothes, the look – everything was very different. When you hear a name like Khujli, you’d think he’s just going to be scratching all the time! The whole essence of the character would’ve been lost,” he shared.
Realizing that the name didn’t suit the essence of the role, Warsi requested the film’s director, Rajkumar Hirani, to change it. He also insisted on modifying the costume design to better reflect the character's quirky yet lovable persona.
Improvisation That Made Circuit Legendary
Warsi’s brilliant comic timing and spontaneous improvisations became the soul of the film. Speaking about the creative process behind the scenes, he revealed:
“In Munna Bhai MBBS, I had to improvise a lot because Raju (Rajkumar Hirani) wasn’t familiar with my sense of humor. I practically improvised every scene. In some scenes, everything you see on screen is what I came up with on the spot.”
No Ego, Just Chemistry: Arshad Warsi on Working with Sanjay Dutt
One of the most cherished aspects of Munna Bhai MBBS was the on-screen camaraderie between Munna (Sanjay Dutt) and Circuit (Arshad Warsi). Warsi spoke fondly about his working relationship with Dutt:
“Sanju and I had great chemistry. There was never any ego. We loved working together. Sometimes, I’d say ‘Sanju, you say this line, I’ll react like this,’ and he’d go along with it.”
Their effortless partnership became a fan favorite and laid the foundation for the blockbuster sequel Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006).
