- In the year 1963, Asrani came to Mumbai with the dream of becoming an actor, where he met filmmakers like Kishore Sahu and Hrishikesh Mukherjee, on whose advice Asrani took admission in the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. After completing his acting studies from Pune Film Institute in 1966, Asrani came to Mumbai.

- Asrani started his film career with the 1967 film 'Hare Kanch Ki Chudiyan'. Amidst all this, Asrani also worked in some Gujarati films. Asrani got noticed to some extent through the film 'Mere Apne' released in 1971.

- Asrani succeeded in making his mark in the film industry through the 1973 film 'Abhimaan'.
