This is from the nineties
Satish Kaushik was going through a period of struggle even in those days, once he was shooting a film in Filmaya Studio, I had gone there to interview Anil Kapoor. When I finished the interview and started returning, Satish Kaushik said a little shyly, "Are only Anil's interviews published in Mayapuri? I am also an actor." And then both of us laughed. I asked him whether he was liking Bollywood or not? He became a bit sad, thought a little and said, "Bollywood is not what I had thought. When I was in the National School of Drama, I used to think that there is a great need for actors like me in Bollywood, like Om Puri, Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin." I will also get strong roles. But that dream has not been fulfilled yet. There are many comedy opportunities coming but there is a need for serious roles. If I also get films like Saaransh, then the audience can see another side of my acting." Then after thinking for a while he said, “But to tell the truth, comedy is also not an easy task.
Only one who has faced difficult situations in life and who can understand life can do comedy. Who can walk with perfect timing, who has amazing command over the language. I can do comedy easily because I have come from a small town and have faced the tragedies of life with a smile." After chatting for a while, I started leaving the film room and he said, "I am also leaving, I have a toothache." Well, have to go to the dentist. " In front of Filmaya, no vehicle was easily available in those days, both of us started stopping different rickshaws. Then I found a rickshaw, I told Satish ji to sit in it and go to the doctor, I would take the second rickshaw. I will catch a rickshaw.
But he said, both of us sit, you get down at Andheri station, I will take the rickshaw. " Years passed after that meeting. He became a successful actor and director, and then one day I met him, I asked, "Are your dreams fulfilled?" He said, "Dreams are dreams but I played such characters that I forgot who I was, sometimes Calendar, sometimes Muthuswamy, sometimes Sharafat Ali, sometimes Pappu Pager, sometimes Ramlal." The audience gave me as much love as the hero gets. Once upon a time, Mehmood, Johnny Walker, Bhagwan Dada used to get so much love. At that time his status was no less than that of a hero. Even today films run on steak comedy, the only difference is that heroes have started doing comedy, although no one calls them comedians but this has reduced the work of comedy actors. During the conversation, he said that he is somewhat happy with his career as a director. He said, "By directing twenty films, I have satisfied the thirst of a versatile actor hidden within me." To be honest, I had the desire to direct since childhood, when I saw the film 'Guide'. What did the guide see? A dream came into my eyes. The atmosphere in my house was not filmy. There was a ban on watching movies, I used to watch movies while hiding. One such secretly watched film was 'Guide' which inspired me to come to Bollywood, inspired me to know Bollywood and sowed the seeds of becoming a director. It is a different matter that due to watching films secretly, I had to wash a lot of money at home, but today when I have become successful as a director and actor, that wash has been recovered. " He finished the conversation laughing. When I asked him how much he had progressed in understanding life, he said while walking, "I understood one thing that everything is on one side and health is on one side. Devanand Saheb was very conscious about his health, my best friends Anil Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Akshay Kumar are also very alert about their health, now I have also started being serious about my health. Actually I don't have any problem but I need to reduce my fat a little. Hopefully my slim trim photo will be published in Mayapuri in the next meeting.
After that I could not meet Satish ji again. His laughter is still echoing in our ears. As his friend Anupam said, "Everyone has to go one day or the other, but I had never imagined even in my dreams that Satish would leave us all so soon and so suddenly." We all have this feeling.
