Achal Surinder "Boney" Kapoor (born 11 November 1953) is an Indian film producer primarily associated with Hindi cinema, although she has also produced Tamil and Telugu films.

Early life and education

Boney Kapoor was born on 11 November 1953 in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Surinder Kapoor, was a well-known Bollywood producer. His family migrated to India from Peshawar (now the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region of Pakistan) after Partition. Boney Kapoor was born into a Punjabi Hindu family and was raised in the Arya Samaj ideology. His two younger brothers—Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor—are both actors and producers. He received his education from Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School and St. Xavier's College, Mumbai.

Beginning of filmmaking career

When Boney was 20, he worked as an apprentice with editor Kamalakar Karkhanis. He worked as an assistant on Shakti Samantha's film The Great Gambler (1979), in which he also had a small uncredited role as Amitabh Bachchan 's body double. Interestingly, he had no interest in films in his early days – he wanted to work in a yarn trading company.

 Mr. India (1987): Turning point of his career

His most famous film was "Mr. India," directed by Shekhar Kapur. The film starred his brother Anil Kapoor, and his future wife, Sridevi. It became the second biggest hit of 1987 and is still considered a cult classic of Indian cinema. Amrish Puri's famous dialogue, "Mogambo khush hua!", was etched in history. The film's songs, especially "Hawa Hawai," remain popular even today. Mr. India was included in the list of the 100 best films of Indian cinema.

 1980s–1990s: Producer who launched big stars

Boney Kapoor's early films included Hum Paanch, which gave recognition to actors like Mithun Chakraborty and Amrish Puri.

In 2000, Boney produced Pukar, starring Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit. The film dealt with national integration and won two National Awards, including the Best Actor award for Anil Kapoor. In 2002, he produced Ram Gopal Varma's Company, a film based on the Mumbai underworld. The film received 11 nominations at the Filmfare Awards and won six. Company is considered to have started the "Mumbai Noir" genre.

 Hits of the 2000s

In 2004, he made Run, which was a box office failure but later became a cult classic due to the "Kauwa Biryani scene". Then came "No Entry" (2005) – a superhit comedy film, which grossed over ₹43 crore. In 2009, he made the Salman Khan starrer Wanted, which broke all box office records. It became the second-highest-grossing film of that year.

Entry into South Indian cinema

Boney Kapoor bought the rights for the Tamil and Telugu remakes of the 2016 Hindi film Pink.

In 2019, he made the Tamil version “Nerkonda Paarvai,” – which proved to be a blockbuster.

In 2021, he produced the Telugu version “Vakeel Saab” (with Pawan Kalyan), which recorded India's biggest opening post COVID.

Debut in acting

In 2023, Boney Kapoor acted for the first time—he played Ranbir Kapoor's father in Tu Jhoothi ​​Main Makkaar.

Interest in cricket

Boney Kapoor is not limited to films only. He is also the owner of Bengal Tigers team in Celebrity Cricket League (CCL).

Boney Kapoor married Mona Shourie Kapoor in 1983.

After separating from Mona, Boney married actress Sridevi on June 2, 1996.

On 24 February 2018, Sridevi died in an accident in Dubai.

Boney Kapoor is also related to the famous Prithviraj Kapoor family, as Prithviraj Kapoor was the cousin of his father Surinder Kapoor.
