As a young student, he actively participated in protests against British rule, even spending time in prison for his convictions. Though he started his cinematic journey relatively late, at the age of 52, Hangal quickly carved a niche for himself. He wasn't your typical Bollywood hero; his strength lay in portraying the everyday man, the relatable character who embodied the struggles and joys of ordinary lives.

Whether it was the gentle wisdom of Ram Shastri in "Aaina," the endearing vulnerability of Inder Sen in "Shaukeen," or the moral compass of Imaam Saheb in the iconic "Sholay," Hangal brought depth and authenticity to every role. He collaborated with some of the finest directors of his time, from Basu Bhattacharya to Ramesh Sippy, and shared screen space with legends like Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan.

Despite his illustrious career spanning over 225 films, Hangal remained grounded, never forgetting his roots. He continued to actively engage in social issues, lending his voice to causes close to his heart. In 2006, he was awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan, recognizing his contributions to both art and society.
