Imtiaz Ali was born on 16 June 1971 in Jamshedpur, Bihar (now Jharkhand). His father Mansoor Ali worked in PWD, due to which Imtiaz's childhood was spent in different cities. He completed his early education in Jamshedpur and Aligarh. Later he moved to Delhi and studied English Literature from Kirorimal College, Delhi University. It was from here that he got inclined towards theater. He directed many plays and also took part in acting while in college. After this, he moved to Mumbai and studied filmmaking from Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.

Imtiaz Ali started his career with Doordarshan's TV show "Imtihan", which he wrote and directed. After this, he also made some other TV serials, but his real dream was to work in films.

His first film "Socha Na Tha" was released in 2005, starring Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia. The film received praise from critics but did not do well at the box office. However, Imtiaz's storytelling style was definitely noticed.
