I first saw Madhuri when she was just a little girl dancing at local Ganpati festivals. She was a student of Divine Child High School for Girls, where she was known as one of the most outstanding students—excelling in academics, sports, and cultural activities. She also pursued Kathak and won a prestigious dance award from the Government of Maharashtra. Loved by teachers, nuns, and even the support staff, Madhuri was a school favourite known for her cheerful nature and grace.

The Girl from Bamanpuri Who Became Bollywood’s Madhuri Dixit

Madhuri’s family lived in a one-room flat at Krishna Nivas in what was originally called Bamanpuri—later renamed JB Nagar after the Marwari community developed the area with strict social codes. I vividly recall every building in JB Nagar had signs stating, “No flats for film people.” Despite this, Madhuri’s father, Shankar Dixit, a civil engineer, managed to get a flat there.

The Dixit family included Shankar, his wife Snehlata—a classical dancer and singer—and their four children: Bharati, Ajit, Roopa, and Madhuri, the youngest. Bharati and Ajit pursued medicine and eventually settled in the U.S., Roopa became a leading painter and interior designer, and Madhuri was pursuing a B.Sc. in Microbiology from Parle College (now Sathaye College) when destiny had other plans.

Hardships and a Turning Point

During this time, Shankar faced serious financial setbacks due to misunderstandings with his brothers. In his attempt to recover, the family went through hardships. Around then, Govind Moonis, a noted writer associated with Rajshri Productions, lived nearby. He once asked the Dixits if they would consider Madhuri acting in Hindi films. Though they weren’t regular film viewers, Moonis convinced them by describing Rajshri Productions as a dignified and value-based studio.

Madhuri to debut with the Bengali actor Tapas Paul in Abodh

This conversation eventually led Madhuri to debut with the Bengali actor Tapas Paul in Abodh. The film didn’t find much success, critically or commercially. She did manage to get a few sister roles in other films and took on a bold character in Manav Hatya, opposite Shekhar Suman, which featured a controversial rape scene—its only highlight.

The Breakthrough: Glamour Meets Destiny

Photographer Rakesh Shrestha shot a glamorous portfolio of Madhuri and showed it to renowned filmmaker Subhash Ghai. Impressed by her charisma, Ghai signed her for his banner and promoted her with an elaborate eight-page spread in Screen magazine, showcasing her in exquisite payals and foreign jewellery. This marked Madhuri’s stunning entry into mainstream Hindi cinema.

The Tezaab Phenomenon: ‘Ek Do Teen’ and Stardom

She acted in several films before N. Chandra signed her for Tezaab opposite Anil Kapoor. Around the same time, she was also shooting for Subhash Ghai’s magnum opus Ram Lakhan. I had grown close to her father, Shankar, who often shared his thoughts with me. Once while we sat on the beach, he said, “Ali, after Tezaab, Madhuri will become a star. Her dance in ‘Ek Do Teen’ will set the screen on fire.”

Didn't know Tezaab was being remade'

And just as he predicted, Tezaab released and became a blockbuster. The song Ek Do Teen became a national obsession. Madhuri became the reigning queen of Bollywood, a position she held until she chose to step away from the spotlight to marry Dr. Shriram Nene and move to Denver, USA. She hosted a grand farewell party attended by the biggest stars in the industry.

I won’t talk about her comeback films, as they can never overshadow her golden legacy. I want to remember her as the dancing diva, forever etched in my heart.

The Most Beautiful Scene of Madhuri’s Life

One day, during a rare break from her packed schedule, Madhuri woke up late and was sipping tea lovingly made by her mother—her favourite. Both mother and daughter sat near a window facing Dev Anand’s bungalow. Dressed in a spotless white kurta-pyjama, without a trace of makeup, Madhuri looked like a dream.

She rested her head in her mother’s lap, both smiling divinely. Her mother brought out a bottle of coconut oil and gently massaged her daughter’s long hair. Madhuri, in childlike innocence, looked up and said in Marathi,
“Aai, mamachya ghari kadhi jauya? Aaj jauya na ga”
(“Mum, when are we going to uncle’s place? Let’s go today, please?”)

Work Front

Talking about work, Madhuri Dixit was last seen in Anees Bazmee's horror-comedy "Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3", which also starred Kartik Aaryan, Vidya Balan, and Tripti Dimri.

She also appeared in the family entertainer "Maja Ma". Apart from this, she has also been actively involved in social and humanitarian work, including promoting children's education and women's safety. She will next be seen in the upcoming web show, "Mrs. Deshpande". Madhuri will be playing a serial killer in the psychological thriller series

So much has changed between the Madhuri of Bamanpuri and today’s global icon, but one thing remains—the magic in her smile, capable of stealing hearts across generations.
