Mithun Chakraborty, popularly known as "Disco Dancer" and "Dada" in Bollywood, has an inspiring life story that encompasses everything - poverty, struggle, Naxalism, stardom, and controversy. Born on 16 June 1950 in Kolkata, Mithun Chakraborty's real name is Gaurang Chakraborty. In a career spanning over five decades, he acted in more than 350 films and left an indelible mark in every genre.
Early life and the Naxal movement
Mithun Chakraborty was inclined towards the Naxalite movement in his youth, which was spreading rapidly in West Bengal at that time. He left his family and joined Naxalite groups. But when the police action intensified, he had to go underground and hide for months. During this time, his elder brother died due to an electric shock. This accident shook Mithun. He said goodbye to Naxalism and decided to take responsibility of his family. This was the turning point that turned him towards Bollywood.
Mithun worked in more than 350 films in his career, which includes Hindi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Oriya and Punjabi films. He also made his presence felt in action films like 'Wanted', 'Commando', 'Boxer', 'Watan Ke Rakhwale'. He also received the Filmfare Award for his strong acting in films like 'Agneepath' and 'Jallad'. Mithun is not only a brilliant actor but also a successful businessman. Days of hunger and struggle
Mithun studied acting from Pune's Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and then moved to Mumbai. But he did not get work here. He even spent days sleeping on the footpath hungry. In an interview, he said, "I used to think whether I would get food tomorrow or not, whether I would get a place to sleep or not."
Without losing courage, Mithun went to film studios and got the opportunity to become Helen's assistant. During that time, he changed his name to 'Raz' so that he could hide his identity. Gradually, people started recognizing him and he started getting small roles.
Got first recognition from 'Mrigayaa'
Mithun got a chance to debut in Bollywood with Mrinal Sen's film 'Mrigayaa'. He won the National Film Award for playing the role of a tribal in the film. But this award also could not get him work soon. His son Mimoh Chakraborty told in an interview that after receiving the National Award, a journalist kept looking for him, and when he met him, Mithun said - "First give me food, then take my interview." The depth of his struggle can be understood from this one line.
'Disco Dancer' and stardom
Mithun got real stardom in 1982 with the film 'Disco Dancer'. This film became a superhit in the Soviet Union more than in India. Mithun was a non-dancer, but the way he danced became a trend across the country. After this, he gave hit films one after the other - 'Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki', 'Commando', 'Pyar Jhukta Nahi', 'Ghulami', and 'Swarg Se Sundar' and dozens of other films. In the year 1989, 17 films of Mithun were released simultaneously. This is a world record which no Bollywood star has been able to break till date.

Mithun's first marriage was with actress Helena Luke in 1979, which broke up in just 4 months. In the same year, he married Yogita Bali, with whom he has three sons - Mimoh, Namashi and Usmeh. Mithun also adopted an abandoned girl, Dishani, who is now preparing to become an actress. Mithun's name was also linked with actress Sridevi. Their relationship was in the news and it is said that they even got married. When Yogita came to know about this, she tried to commit suicide. After this, Mithun broke off his relationship with Sridevi and returned to the family. Sridevi was devastated by this breakup.
Threat from Dawood and the Mandakini case
Mithun's name was also linked with Mandakini. Both of them worked together in many films. During this time, underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, who was considered close to Mandakini, threatened Mithun. After the death threats, Mithun took the help of Sanjay Dutt and never worked with Mandakini again.
Apart from acting, business and politics
Mithun Chakraborty is not just an actor. He is also a successful businessman. He has 'Monarch Hotel' and many cottages in Ooty. He owns 116 dogs, out of which 78 live in Ooty and 38 in Mumbai. He also entered politics and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2021. He also served as a Rajya Sabha MP.
