Rohit Shetty was born on 14 March 1974 in Mumbai. His father M.B. Shetty was a well-known stuntman and actor of Bollywood, who was famous for his dangerous action sequences. His mother Ratna Shetty was a homemaker. Rohit saw the world of films closely since childhood, but there was no less struggle in his life. Rohit's film journey started at a very young age. He entered the film industry as an assistant director at the age of just 17. His early days were full of difficulties.

Rohit Shetty started his career as an assistant director in Ajay Devgan starrer film Phool Aur Kaante (1991). After this, he also worked as an assistant director in films like Suhaag (1994) and Haqeeqat (1995). He got real recognition in 2003, when he directed his first film Zameen with Ajay Devgan. Although this film was not a big hit at the box office, it definitely gave him a chance to make his place in direction.
